West Portal
mallest and least ornate of the
portal entrances, the West Portal was used for the passage of horse drawn
prisoner vans. The vans transported accused criminals to a cordoned off
area known as the prisoner's yard in the southwest corner of the
courtyard.
alking in a direction opposite that
traveled by the vans, we first pass through a single story chamber, then
a double height chamber to the outside, an area now known as Dilworth Plaza.
Of course at the end of the 19th century, Dilworth Plaza did not exist,
and as we turn to look at the West Portal we see The Prisoner's Entrance
as it first appeared to the accused on their way to trial.
he
allegorical theme here is Administration of Justice, and we see
it reflected first in the keystone over the entrance that symbolizes Sympathy.
Flanking the keystone are reliefs of an anchor and a balance indicating
Hope and Justice.
bove the portal, at the second story
spandrels, a bowed and bearded figure with outstretched hands demands Repentence
from a youthful figure with chin in hand. A mother scolds a child in a
display of Admonition in the other spandrel..
assing back through the portal
toward the courtyard, notice the inset panels on either side of the archway.
Carvings of thorns, thistles, and writhing serpeants are there to remind
transgressors that difficult times are ahead.
Two
ferocious lion heads protrude from the walls and appear to guard against
any passage back to the outside. Directly ahead, in the keystone above
the archway to the single story chamber, is the "deep lined featured,
painfully intense" figurehead representing Remorse - complete
with chains about its forehead. Even the gray granite walls of the portal
seem cold and foreboding, and the iron grating covering windows and doors
complete the feeling that this enterance was never intended to be inviting.
efore we get too depressed by this
gloomy entryway, lets hurry back through to the courtyard and turn south
to explore the grandure of the SOUTH PORTAL .
