Computers

If my computer does not boot at least once a day, I am probably not at home. I usually turn it on at least once to check my email. I have B.Sc. in Computers so it is also my profession. It has occupied much of my life for the past five years, so I am taking some time off from it now to focus on building the other facets of my life.

Philosophy

I love philosophy, but up to a point: I do not lecture people or give advice. I don't like people giving me advice: I can think for myself. Neither do I think that I was sent here to fix people's lives. I like philosophy at the 'musing' level: I see Life teaching another person or me a lesson and I smile and think it over. Neither do I bother with things that I consider mundane e.g. 'If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around, does it make a sound?' Who cares???

Books

Spending a lot of time on the computer can be tiring, both to my eyes and to my mind. I prefer the old-fashioned way of reading - namely paper books. My interest in reading was awakened by two Douglas Adams books I recently read. Other than computer books, I concentrate mainly on 'classics', philosophy and inspirational. I occasionally enjoy science fiction and mystery. I can stand some mild horror, but nothing too graphic. Romance, westerns, thrillers and contemporary fiction do not appeal to me. I hated Literature at school, but now I have a renewed interest in it.

Money

Ah, my bundle of joy! How do I love thee? Let me count my assets... none. I was out of a paycheck for ten months recently; you could imagine how much I think about it. One day I will be rich, but till then it remains an elusive dream.

Art

I have found that I have focussed too much on the sciences (math and computer) that I have only developed the left side of my brain. I have developed an interest in art to try and overcome this deficiency. I guess the biggest problem is trying to say what I like about a work because it brings my left brain in to play. Thus I prefer to just watch a piece and enjoy it and feel how it affects me, without describing it.

Music

I like classical music, jazz, Latin, Flamenco. I also like some Bhangra (Punjabi folk music). I like some pop music, but given a chance I would rather listen to the former types. I like only selected pieces of rap (e.g. the Kel and Kenan theme), calypso, rock, alternative, reggae, dub, and grunge. I do not listen to acid rock/death metal. I like to listen to indigenous and folk music, for example, Chinese or German. Music to me is the soul of a culture, the voice of a culture. Music expresses a culture in a way words are impossible to relate. It goes beyond understanding a culture to feeling what a culture is like.

Ray-Tracing

Combine my love for art with my passion for computers and what do you get? Ray tracing is one way of creating photorealistic images. It goes beyond the paint program by providing shading and accurate perspective, among many other features. Though it can be hard work to get the exact picture in your mind, the resulting scene is worth the effort. Keep a ruler, pencil and paper on hand, though, to sketch your ideas and get rough dimensions.

Public Affairs

As an up and coming citizen and future leader, I take an interest in society. I usually don't argue for the sake of argument (although I can be adamant and annoying). I prefer to think of it as debating rather than arguing. I argue facts; I am not interested in the intrigue, the passion or the conspiracy theories. The same goes for politics; however, it is more difficult to be objective in politics, unless, of course, you are against everyone.

Sport

If you have read this far, you may be a bit surprised to see a section on Sport. Rest assured that I hardly play sports. I do, however, take a deep interest in NBA. While I do not know all of the players' statistics at the tip of my tongue, I usually check the scores every night. I am not a basketball fanatic, stocking NBA memorabilia. I also do not worship Jordan.
