What is Art?

Those who first thought of it categorized it into two types: the liberal arts, and the fine arts.

Liberal arts are concerned with skills in verbal expressions. This may be in the form of speech, communication, or by reasoning. A good example would be the great philosophers who seat with each other exchanging thoughts on certain issues concerning everything that man could ever think, contesting each other's views. Every man engaging in healthy arguments are not exempted from performing liberal arts.

Fine arts are more emotional in nature. These are non-utilitarian creations based on human experiences and imaginations. But the main focus of fine art is to produce masterpieces of supreme appeal. So anything to be considered an art has to be very beautiful. Fine arts include musical compositions, sculptures, paintings, literary works, dance moves, and even architectural works.

Where do utilitarian works of art fit?

Utilitarian masterpieces are very artistic crafts that have functional value other than aesthetic purposes. They are called decorative arts as a distinction from fine arts. These are often seen on textile designs, furniture designs, and other crafts of that sort.

Why are architectural works considered fine arts?

Not all times are architectural works considered as fine arts. The only times that they are considered are those times when the emotional or the aesthetic aspects are considered more than the functionality of certain works. Other than those, architecture is considered as a combination of fine and decorative art.

So?

Every person has his own right to choose to do what he thinks is his way of expressing himself. He is in control of what form of art he has to produce. But these choices need to consider certain standards to be called works of arts.
