Inside each of us, there is a crowd.
Many characters by turn compete for center stage in our personal myth.
We are all of these (and none), and it helps if we can consciously name the players we host. Who lives within you?
Can you visualize your guests, describe their dress and behavior, name them?
Can you tell when your characters shift their domain of control? Watch as you go about your days.
Ask yourself, "Who is on stage? Who waits in the wings?" To help you, I'd like to describe a few of the "actors" I know reside within me.
Others are probably there; I'm still looking! Maybe we share a few of these.
Surely we share the first: Always and forever, there is Dear Beast,
a hard-working, hard-driven little animal
who regularly gets hungry or tired or needs to stop for the bathroom,
and who for the most part is uncomplaining until her needs become acute,
but who then can get cranky and absolutely MUST be tended to! Dear Beast is ruthlessly used by Rider,
an athletic figure in jodphurs and spurs,
who wears a pageboy haircut and carries a quirt, and who becomes so excited
at the thrill of what lies over the next hummock or around the next bend
that she is quite capable of driving Dear Beast right into the ground! Rider is a breathless seeker, enchanted at the beauties of the world
through which she travels so recklessly. Then there is Hurt Child,
a pathetic, whimpering little figure
who recoils at a touch and needs constant reassurance.
(Hurt Child is fading; I see less of her as I grow in my spirit studies.) Hurt Child is fiercely defended by Guardian Angel,
an imposing figure with crossed swords and eyes of flame,
who can lash out fearlessly at any foe, real or imagined.
(Guardian Angel seems to be acquiring more discretion
and wisdom as I proceed with my spirit quest. ˇOjalá!) My least favorite is Penumbra, an awkward shadow
who sees only the dark side, who pulls counter and downward
to my every move, a heavy, recalcitrant dancer I acknowledge
but deplore when she visits. My favorite is Weaver,
the creative woman who works in fabric
or with words or music
to spin a world of great beauty and centered peace. It is Weaver who transcends and in moments of satori
experiences total release from all other personalities,
real or imagined,
and just IS and is CONNECTED to the ALL THAT IS. Weaver shares and invites others into her world,
but her center is unshakeably within herself.
Note that her meditative state is an ACTIVE one.
She is a strong part of Lady Lucero. Occasionally there is Mythic Dreamer,
a bit fey, a rapt creature who dances with sycamore trees and sees Pan in the garden.
Not always with me, but a delight when she visits. Now, it's YOUR turn.
I invite you to quest within and name your crowd.
Get acquainted with the actors in your personal drama.
Respect and enjoy them, for they give color to your days and shape to your world. Happy pathways! You never walk alone!
