Simply Ahead!
What makes a good homoeopathic computer program? Above all else it must be easy to use! It must also have a comprehensive database of rubrics and remedies for you to work with. The repertorisation options must be flexible enough to help you with every case you see. The program should be intuitive and fun to use! It must be well supported. It should have a good manual including tutorial to get you started quickly and to guide you through the more advanced features. You should learn more about homoeopathy from using the program.
The Combined Repertory was originally based on Kent's Repertory but has been considerably expanded and now contains thousands of additions. Many of these additions have been taken from the same sources used in the Synthetic Repertory and significantly expand the Mental, General, Sleep, Dreams and Sexual rubrics. The Combined Repertory retains the same schema of chapters and rubric layout as the original Kents Repertory.
Also included in the Combined Repertory are all of the additions to Kent suggested by Vithoulkas (we have taken great care to conform to the style and meanings used by Kent) . For good measure we also incorporated the provings of Scorpion, Hydrogen and Chocolate made by the Dynamis school. The recognized additions for Carcinosin are also included. All in all CARAs Combined Repertory provides a comprehensive source of rubrics and remedies for you to work with. To further enhance the database CARA also contains Boericke's Repertory and Phatak's Repertory both of which contain valuable information.
CARA provides the Combined Repertory, Boericke's Repertory, Phatak's Repertory, Boerickes Materia Medica, Phataks Materia Medica, Kents Lectures and Allens Keynotes all as standard.
Available as an option is Robin Murphy's Homeopathic Medical Repertory. This work considerably expands Kent by including additions from such sources as Kunzli, Knerr and of course Robin himself. Old terminology has been replaced with modern terms and expressions. Valuable new chapters are introduced such as Children, Diseases, Environment and Toxicology. Also available is the worlds best repertory COMPLETE REPERTORY. This is available only with CARA.
A superior feature of CARA not found in other programs is that you can tell it to search all of the REPERTORIES AT THE SAME TIME (other programs make you choose a book to work with). This is called the Easy Search. All you have to do is type in a word or two and CARA will do the rest! Every book and chapter and rubric are searched all in just a few seconds. Quicker than you could open one printed book to a chapter!
Let CARA do the work for you. No more worrying about having to know exactly where in the repertory a particular rubric is. You do not need to be familiar with the structure of a repertory to use it. CARA will both surprise and delight you with the rubrics it finds. The repertories are 'opened up' to you like never before!
If you do want to work with a specific book CARA lets you find exactly the rubric you are looking for. It so easy to use CARA! Simply choose the chapter you need by clicking the mouse on the little pictures or "icons" of the various chapters.
Once you have told CARA which book and chapter your rubric is in you can see it on the screen in a couple of seconds. CARA even has a special search method that displays rubrics on the screen as you type the letters of a word in!
When you want to reference a different book all you do is click the mouse on a book tab and CARA takes you straight to it! This unique feature of CARA makes everything so easy!
A really useful CARA feature is the comprehensive list of synonyms and cross references it contains. For example, if you search the repertories for CAPRICIOUS, in addition to CAPRICIOUS and CAPRICIOUSNESS CARA will also find rubrics containing the words CHANGEABLE and INCONSTANCY for you. Quickly and easily! Remember other software available in market will only find CAPRICIOUS for you.
In addition to utilizing synonyms in this way CARA also relates together words belonging to the same family so you don't have to worry about typing the exact word to find a rubric. English and American spelling differences are overcome in this way - you just type what comes naturally to you and CARA takes care of the conversion. You can also type in abbreviations like FLU and quickly find all references to INFLUENZA, GRIPPE etc. in all the repertories. You can even add to the list of synonyms and cross-references yourself to personalize your CARA system.
Just as each patient is different so is each homoeopath! CARA doesn't put you in a straight-jacket but works how you want to - CARA gives you total flexibility.
You can place your case rubrics onto work-areas called Clipboards and assign weightings or underlines to any of the rubrics. Rubrics can also be marked as Eliminative or Causative to help in analysis. Similar rubrics can be combined together to form 'super-rubrics' that contain remedies from both of the combined rubrics.
CARA's strategies allow you to analyse a case in the traditional 'totality' way and also let you apply your own thinking to case analysis. You can decide which remedies to use - for example you might want to ignore polycrests - or you could tell CARA to only work with remedies belonging to certain miasmatic groups (e.g. Sycotic, Psoric etc.).
CARA further classifies remedies according to their origin (e.g. Plant, Mineral, Snake etc.) and the families they belong to (e.g. Natrums, Kalis, Carbs etc.) and lets you repertorise using such classifications. This is the most important feature which is not available in any other software. e.g. when you repertorise a case & you want to see only calcareas in the case then by just clicking the mouse , all calcareas available in the case will be shown. This way you
can repertorise your case as calcs, snakes, metals , plants, animals etc.
You can assign all of your mental rubrics onto one clipboard and repertorise just those rubrics to see which remedies best cover the case mentals. And then do the same with the Local or General rubrics.
With CARA you have complete control over the repertorisation process combined with the flexibility to practice how you want. If you use rubric "underlining" you can analyse your case using the Apply Weightings strategy. If you want you can emphasize the smaller remedies. Or stress the significance of certain remedies in certain rubrics.
Perhaps you want to look for and emphasize those "strange, rare and peculiar" rubrics in your case. And you can even combine all of these strategies together to provide many different ways to find the similimum until you find the setting that works best for you.
CARA's Expert System is a way of analyzing your cases using all of the strategies in combination with each other but with an expert's view.
The Expert System has been devised by Homoeopaths and fine-tuned against many published, cured cases and the result is a tool you can use on each and every case you see.
But true to form (and unlike other systems) CARA doesn't hide how the expert works! By being 'open' and showing how the expert works CARA helps you see exactly how to arrive at indicated remedies. This helps you grow in your homoeopathic knowledge rather than turning you into a lazy prescriber.
You can even adjust the settings of the expert system yourself to create your own 'expert' - a truly exciting feature not found in other systems.
The result is just amazing! You will be presented with remedies you would never have thought of! It will help you learn more about homoeopathy and will provoke you into thinking differently about your cases.
The materia medicas are instantly displayed side by side for you to read in CARAs unique book tab style. Just click on a book tab to immediately switch to that materia medica and open it up to your desired remedy. You will love being able to do this from within a repertory chart - so intuitive!
No need to run a separate program to do this or to leave your repertorisation - the materia medicas are beautifully integrated within CARA.
CARA places no restrictions on how many you can add. And the addition's really work! Just as soon as you make an addition into your personal repertory you can start to use it with your cases.
CARA supports you further by extracting whole rubrics from the existing repertories into your personal repertory for amendment - this saves you time. Simply export an entire rubric and make your additions. Then the next time you come across this rubric CARA will direct you to your personal repertory.
Choosing your PC
PCs come in different models usually expressed as 386, 486 or Pentium. Although CARA will run on all of these models buy the fastest you can afford (preferably 486 or Pentium). The speed of a PC is usually indicated by the megahertz rating of the CPU within it. Hence you will see PCs described as 486-33Mhz or 486-50Mhz. A good rule of thumb to apply is that the higher the value of the megahertz the faster the computer will be. Most importantly you need at least 4Mb RAM memory in your computer (we recommend 8Mb if your budget can stretch that far and especially if you plan to run Windows 95) and 22Mb of unused hard disk space for the minimum system (please check specification sheet of the latest version of CARA for full disk space requirements).
CARA is protected from illegal copying by a protection device known as a dongle. This gives maximum flexibility as it allows you to install CARA on as many different computers as you like but it will only run on the computer that has the dongle fitted. Your computer must have a Parallel port (printer port) to accept this protection device (all computers have this)
