"Oh well how did you jnow the signal?"
"We didn't really, Iwas just answering their questions and banging my

The owl looked at them suprised. "Well you are very lucky."
"Yes but you see we must be going."
"So soon?"
"Uh, yes."
After they went outside Digger said "Thout was ruude Choup."
"I know that Matey but that owl could have eaten us."
"Oi knows that but we'm halmost hout ter sumplious."
The two freinds continued into the distance.
Chapter 7
The Abbot slowly made his way across the abbey grounds. He wondered why
those two little
rascals had run away.
"Father Abbot!"a young mouse said running up to the
Abbot"There's a
giant bird outside the gatehouse."
"Do you know what it wants?"
"No it
just says 'I must see the

"I wonder if I know this bird?" "You could!
You could!" The abbot walked
over to the gatehouse shaking his head.
The stork was very mad. "I must see the abbot!"
"Calm down,Long Beak,

"Ah there you are Father Abbot. I must say I have improtant news. There
is a great vermin hoard
north west of here and it appaeres to be getting ready to head

"So, why does this

"It's going to get renforcements and head this way! There
is also a squirell
following them. It apears that an otter and a mole are following him."
"Oh my, that must be
Arven, Chip and Digger. Could you help Digger and Chip catch up?"
"Gladly
Father Abbot." The big
bird flew away.
Chapter 8
A big bird white landed in front of Chip and Digger. "Right you two, the
Father Abbot sent me to
help you catch up with Arven."
The great bird without asking scooped up
Chip and Digger and placed them on his back. As they flew towards Arven, Chip said "This is very thoughtful of the Abbot, wasn't it Digger?" "Oi yur heem been vury koind towm send 'im."

Chapter 9
Filthtail Clogg was grumpy. Sure he was master of Marshank but it wasn't a very good fortress. He needed a stone fortess. Thats why he wanted Redwall. But first his brother Scumfoot and his hoard needed to come. And they weren't here! He knew he had said he would rule jointly but that wouldn't work. No, He would find an assaisin. Vermin did things like that. Anothe thing that
bothered him was that his ancestor Traumen Clogg had been the freindly enemy of the origanal owner of this fortress. He had been the sole survivor of the attack of that accursed mouse
Martin. From captives he had heard that he had built Redwall. He would take Redwall to get revenge on Martin! "Ahoy Scumfoots hoard headed this way." Good he would needed to look for
an assasin soon. After he had gained his tust.
Yes after. After.
AfteZzzzzzzzzz. Filthtail Clogg had fallen asleep.

Prologue
On the dead plains of Domar, in Southsward, all was quiet. Pillars of moonlight shone down, giving an eerie feeling to the deathly silence. In the center of the huge plains, encircled by a vast black wall, was a city. It was a city of spires and columns, rising to the sky. And in it's center was the great palace. This solid black structure was the only thing on the plain that was untouched by the ravages of passing centuries. It's huge central pillar rose hundreds of feet up. High on a cliff, overlooking the ancient ruins of the city, was a fox. His cloak swirled about him, black as night. A shaft of sinister moonlight beamed down upon him, illuminating his sinister features for a moment before a cloud covered the light. He let loose a wicked, screaming howl. He had arrived.
Chapter I
Two young squirrels, Dyrne and Julia, scrambled about on the rooftops of Redwall. Abbess Songbreeze, who was strolling about on the lawn, suddenly spotted them. "Dyrne! Julia! What are you doing up there?"
The two squirrels looked down from their perch on the weather vane. The abbess smiled. She was still very young, and new to her position as abbess. She knew she ought to call them down, but she didn't see how they could come to any harm. Falling was out of the question, because, well, they were squirrels. They began scrambling down.
Julia curled herself into a ball and began rolling down the rooftop. Flying off the edge, she caught hold of an outcropping in the abbey wall and swung herself onto one of the lower roofs, then jumped nimbly to the ground. Dyrne follwed close behind. Julia was a young female squirrel, and very pretty. She was attired in a baggy white shirt, several sizes too big, and a pair of dark green pantaloons. On her feet were soft leather boots, and holding up her long auburn hair was a golden comb, given to her by her mother before she died. She was very mischevious, and wherever trouble was, she was sure to be there too. Dyrne was a young male squirrel, and considerably more cautious than his headstrong friend. He was wearing a green tunic, tied with a black sash, and floppy black pants. "Mother abbess", said Dyrne, "We've found something on the rooftop near the weathervane. There's wire hooks on the north arm, and a sort of indentation beneath them. Do you know what they could be?"
The young squirrels looked at the abbess, who was more of a friend to them than an abbess. "Actually, I do," she said, smiling. "Come on." The three young squirrels took off running toward the abbey building, enjoying the warm summer day and the radiant sun. The arrived in Great Hall completely winded. Songbreeze looked at them. "What I am about to show you, you must never reveal to anyone." She walked over a a carving of a rose in the wall. Grasping the rosehip firmly, she twisted it so it pointed sideways. A section of wall slid open, revealing a small room. Inside, lying on a plain wooden bench, was a sword, beautifully crafted. Power seemed to glow from the shining silver blade. The hilt was golden, with leather grips along it.
"This is the sword of Martin the Warrior," said the abbess reverently. "It
was once hidden away up on the weathervane, and now it is kept here, to be used in time of trouble. Only a few know it is here.
I pray that there will never be a need for it at our abbey again."
Atran Teranight sat high in the Imperial Palace in the city of
Darknyte. His huge army of ferrets had finished their task and repaired the entire city. Now a vast land lay before him, waiting to be conquered. He sat in the throne room. It was a circular room in the top of the central pillar of the palace.
The walls, ceiling, and floors were entirely black. He sat in a large black chair in front of one of the many huge windows that ringed the room. In the center of the room was a thick pillar stretching from ceiling to floor. This contained the stairway that went all the way up the central pillar. The door in this pillar opened, and a stunningly beautiful red fox stepped in. She had a look of evil smeared across her lovely face, marring it. She was wearing a black baggy shirt with red pantaloons and soft black leather boots. Tucked into her gold sash was a ruby-encrusted daggar. Her shoulder length silver hair fell down under a ruby tiara. From her ears hung thin gold chains with rubies set on the ends. "Yes, father," she said with a sly smile. "What is it that you want?"
"Pyr," said Atran, "summon your brothers. I have plans."
Pyr stepped out of the room, closing the door behind her.
Chapter 3
Queen Ellidya sat in the regal throne room of Castle Floret. She was reading writing a reply to a message sent to her by Redwall. The messenger, a young female hare named Eire, stood waiting patiently. Ellidya signed her name with a flourish and set down the white feather charcoal pen. The folded the message carefully, dripped a tiny amount of hot wax onto the letter, and pressed the royal seal of Southsward into it. She handed it to the Eire and said with a smile, "Thank you, Eire. Would you care to stay the night? It will be dark very soon, and there are bandits along these roads.
"No thank you, maam. I need to get back as soon as possible for the Nameday feast.," said the hare, without the accent that was quite usual for hares. She walked out of the room, and soon she was making the long descent down the twisting path from the castle. She reached the bottom in about fifteen minutes and started off on the road to Redwall. She had not gone thirty paces when she heard yelling behind her. She spun around and stared in horror.
Queen Ellidya was quietly sipping in her royal chambers when suddenly an otter rushed burst through the doors, shouting, "Majesty, we're under attack! Ferrets have...". An arrow suddenly ripped through his chest, and he fell to the ground. Ellidya jumped up from her throne, snatched a daggar sitting nearby, and ran through her apartments toward her bedchamber, with the sound of cursing ferrets not too far behind her.
Tjera Stormwind, the captain of the otter regiments saw that the situation was hopeless. She ordered her soldiers to make an organized withdrawl into the barracks. The last of the otters rushed in and bolted the door, and not a moment later, the ferrets were pounding to get in. Tjera knew it would not be long before they were in. She and two strong otters rushed to a row of beds that were all connected. The grasped the bottom of the row and heaved as hard as they could. The row of beds lifted, revealing a large passageway. All the otters jumped in, last of all Tjera, pulling the beds shut behind her. They rushed through the passageway. She looked around quickly, assessing her troops. She had about two score otters left, half of the original force. Soon they came into a huge cavern with a large lake in the middle. A ship was anchored there. It was for any emergency that would force the Queen to flee. This lake connected to the Great South Stream. From there, thanks to a channel dug by thousands of laborers during the reign of a tyrant, they could make it to the River Moss and then to Redwall, where they would be safe.
Ellidya made it into her bedchamber and bolted the door. She rushed quickly over to a side table and swung it aside. Behind it was a small passageway barely large enough for her to crawl through. She went quickly in She would go to her escape ship, and hopefully most of her otters would be there waiting for her.
Tjera looked around quickly. The queen was not here. Perhaps she was on board the ship already. Or perhaps...no, she would not contemplate that. The queen had to be safe. She must be already on the ship. The otters walked up the gangplank. There was no sign of life on the ship. Suddenly, a rain of arrows came from all around them and a huge number of ferrets came out from their hiding places on the shore and the ship, all firing arrows. She quickly pulled out her sling, but not quickly enough. A searing pain ripped through her side, and the edges of her vision began going bleary. She sank slowly onto the deck, and the last thing she saw was the triumphant glare of a fox.
Ellidya came into the large chamber several minutes later. The otters were not here. Could something have happened to them? They would have known to come here...suddenly, a black fox appeared, separating himself from the cavern wall. He wore a white shirt, green pantaloons, and a huge red cape. The queen fingered her dagger, which was hidden inside her silk robe. "Welcome, milady," said the fox, with a mock bow. Menace danced in his eyes. "I've been waiting for you. Perhaps I should introduce myself. I am Darklair, son of Lord Teranight, ruler of the southern lands. And now his empire extends to Southsward." A wicked grin spread across his face. "Of course, you were expecting to escape to Redwall. I am here to detain you." Ellidya, for the first time in her life, knew real fear. But she had confidence that Tjera and the otters would arrive soon. One fox would be easy prey for them. Besides, the fox appeared to be unarmed. As if sensing her thoughts, Blackdeath said, "I know you are expecting that fool of a captain to come to your aid. Let me enlighten you." He pulled a piece of scarlet cloth from his cloak. Ellidya gasped. It was Tjera's cape. She whipped out her dagger, took aim, and... Almost before she could think, the fox reached into his cloak, whipped out a silver dagger with deadly looking black poison on the end, and let it fly, all in the space of a heartbeat. Before Ellidya could tell what was happening, she felt a terrible sting in her arm. Her dagger clattered to the floor. A few seconds later, she followed.
Chapter Five
Atran Teranight stood in the highest room of the spire of the
Darknyte Palace. The circularroom was bare except for a column containing the staircase in the middle of the room which stretched from ceiling to floor. Everything was black stone except for the walls, which were nothing but windows. His black cloak swirled around him, although there wasn't even the slightest movement of air. He had Southsward. Yet he must have more. He would not rest until he had conquered all the beasts of the world. He walked to the staircase and descended.
Ashira's kind had never before been seen in Mossflower. She was a genet, deadly as death itself. She had survived the shipwreck simply because she would not allow herself to not survive. She wore a simple dark green tunic fastened at the waist by a black leather belt. On her feet were black leather boots. Around her neck was an emerald necklace, and on hear ears emeralds hanging on golden chains. Her silky red hair was pulled around her shoulder, her piercing green eyes taking in everything at once. In her hand was a bow. Her sharp eyes noticed an almost invisible path through the sand to the right. She set off along it, going wherever it would take her.
Redflash Teranight was reclining on a comfortable black bed in his room. He was stripped to the waist and wearing a pair of black pantaoons. There was a sharp rap at the door. He stood up and stretched, then walked across to the door and opened it. At the door was his oldest brother, Blackdeath. He was wearing a very tight white short-sleeved shirt, slit to about halfway down and black boots and pantaloons. "Father demands your presence in the counci chamber," he said, then closed the door and walked away. Redflash had no desire to obey his father, but he knew it was death to do otherwise. He walked across to where his clothes were laid out on a chair. He pulled on his black boots and fastened them, then pulled on his baggy dark blue shirt, tucked it in, and exited the room. He came into a circular room near the base of the central spire with three other doors leading off of it. Everything, of course, was made of black stone. The torches that burned on the walls were the only illumination. He walked to a column rising through the middle of the room, from celing to floor, and opened a door on it. Stepping in, he found himself in a huge spiraling staircase. He walked up several stories and stopped outside of a large door. He knocked three times then opened the door and stepped into the room. It, like every other room in the spire, was circular with the staircase column in the middle. Sitting in a large chair in front of him was his father, swathed in his black clothes. Around him were four chairs, three of them occupied by his older twin, Pyr, his younger brother, Darklair, and his older brother, Blackdeath. He took the fourth seat and listened as his father spoke. "You are to divide our force into two parts. Pyr and Darklair, take half and go northeast. Redflash and Blackdeath, take the other half and go northwest. Take everybeast prisoner, conquering in the mighty name of Teranight!"
Chapter Six
The abbeydwellers were training for war, in case the warlord of Eire's story should venture toward them. Dannflor, Julia, Dyrne, and a strong young male otter named Dar were each taking command of a regiment. Dyrne was exhausted and sweaty. He had been training his eager but clumsy charges all morning in the use of the javelins, and only a handful were showing any progress. Julia was doing better. She was teaching the use of the bow, and many of her group proved to be quite good at it. A hail of arrows flew towards a target, most of them hitting it, one or two coming very close to the center. Dar the otter was watching with a slight smile of satisfaction as his regiment whirled their slings. Dannflor was clad in his usual apparel - a short-sleeved knee-length white tunic, loose dark blue pants, and white boots. He dropped his small practice sword on the ground. His regiment was on break. He walked over to the abbey steps, where several dibbuns and elders were watching the training. He looked over to where Julia was carefully showing Songbreeze how to aim her bow. The abbess carefully pulled back the arrow on the string and let go. The arrow quivered from the center of the target. The first abbess ever to carry a weapons in Redwall was showing a marvelous aptitude for it.
A sparra winged its way choppily across the sky. Suddenly, an arrow flew from nowhere and pierced its little heart. It fell to the earth, dead. Ashira stood up from her hiding place behind the rocks and walked over to it. She would eat well tonight. She had entered the western fringes of Mossflower. Soon she would arrive. She knew not where, but she felt it as clearly as she felt the wind on her face. She was very close now.
Chapter Seven
Redeye sent the first part of his fan-fic in-
The sun glinted slightly off the back of Deishie the mad as he searched through the thin underbrush.
Most inntelligent creatures in his small group of slavers knew that he would find nothing in such a small
place, but were too terrified of his to do anything about it. You see, on the outside, Deishie looked like
an ordinary ferrit, which he was. The difference however, was in his mind. His mind was a crooked
system of weak fibers which could snap at any provocation, if they hadn't already snaped long ago.
Through that mind at the moment, only one thought ran through.
"How could I let them excape?" Over
and over it played with his mind, as if it wasn't his own doing, but was being controled by someone else.
So with this thought, he was driven to search in every possible place in order to find the two excaped
slaves.
Meanwhile, in a tent on the edge of the temporary encampment set up by Deishie's group, sat Riptail
and Bladesnout, two of the rats under Deishies command. Riptail took an almost empty canteen out of
his snakehide bag. He held out his tongue and shook the water capsule over it.
"I's tell yer, if we don't find a source 'a flowin rations, we're in mighty big trouble matey." Riptail said just
for the sake of breaking the silence as only a few drops fell out. Bladesnout, the more educated of the
two rats, pretended not to hear as he studied a ancient looking map.
"Wow, that 'ol map thingy must be real int'restin on acount that ya can't speak ter yer ol messmate
rapiers." He said impaitently. In the silence that followed, Riptail put on a sick face rubbed his head
with a trimmed claw. "Ahh" He mock-groaned weakly.
"I's tink I got a case of the dryditch fever!" Bladesnouts eyes did not move from the map.
"Can't ya 'ere me matey?! I'm gunna die a 'orrible an painfull death!" Still, there was nothing from
Bladesnout.
Riptail twisted about, as if in agony, then threw himself onto the ground and pretended to die.
Bladesnout slightly moved away from the foolhardy rat. Riptail pounced at him in a playful manner only
to get smacked upside the head.
Rubbing his head, Riptail murmered "Wots on the stupid map thingy 'ats so important as 'ta hit yer own
best matey?"
"First of all, shut up about this "Matey" stuff. I didn't choose to share a tent, you did. And second, the
map holds the key to our future." Bladesnout finally said.
"If the map is so good, then where are we?" Riptail questioned.
Bladesnout sighed. "We're in a place called Mossflower woods. About half of a days travel from here is
a place called Brockhall." Bladesnout grined as he spoke of the next part. "That place has been
abandoned for almost hundreds of seasons. If there was some kind of treasure there, think of how much
it would be worth today. That, my dimwitted companion, is where we're headed."
"WE! You said we! See 'ol Bladey, ya do like me!" Riptail exclamed. Bladesnout quickly smacked him
across the back of the head and covered his mouth as a senturie walked by. When it had passed, he
continued.
"I'm only takeing you with me because if I don't, you'd end up telling Deishie that I deserted. Now, if he
does find out, we head strait westward for a place called Redwall. There, we will be able to hide out
untill the group moves out of Mossflower. Are we clear?"
"When do we go?" Riptail said, his face suddenly serious. Bladesnout looked out the tent flap. He saw
Deishie gathering a search party to go eastward.
"As soon as he can't see us." With this, Riptail nodded understandingly.
The two prisoners who had excaped were Clapton, a strongly built but smaller than most mouse, and
Rigg, a large brawny otter. They could hear the muffled commands of the search party as they were
rappidly persued.
"I can see the bushes moveing over there! Snipeneck, you take half the group and circle around to the
other side! We'll catch them in a pincer techneque." Snipeneck, Deishies longtime friend and
second-in-command, did as he was told. Rigg knew that they were coming, but could do nothing about
it. In fact, he was too tired to do anything but run at the moment. Suddenly, Clapton started to fall
behind and make strange noises that were muffeled with exertion. "Niff, plim, Ri, Ri.....g." The mouse
collapsed to the ground. Rigg stopped and scooped up the head of his companion.
"Come on Clap! We have to keep going!" All that came from Clapton was more mumbeling. Rigg
looked up and saw both halfs of the search party closing in. He looked around to find any sort of hiding
place that he could find. One thing caught his eye. A few yards away, was a large tree with an opening
in the roots making a small cave. He ran over to it draging Clapton behind him. It was only large enough
to fit one creature, and hardly even that. Without thinking, he shoved the mouse inside it and looked
around for a place for himself to hide. It was too late, Deishie and Snipeneck were apon him. Deishie
held up a claw for silence. He mad a motion with his claw and the group circled around the otter.
Deishie steped up in front of him.
"Where is the other, waterdog?" With this question, Rigg laughed and spit in his face. Not bothering to
wipe it off, Deishie gave out another command.
"Archers, prepare to fire on my command!" The 5 archer in the group redied their bows.
"I'll give you one more chance otter! Come back to the camp with the mouse and I might forget that this
ever happened!" Rigg raised the eyebrow above his good eye, the other was covered by an eyepatch.
With one swift movement, he threw a curving punch into the side of Deishies face, knocking him
sideways. He quickly regained his composure and glared at Rigg. He quickly grabed the otter and and
whispered something.
"Then I'll see you in hell!" He let go and raised his fist, the signal for the archers to fire. Rigg fell down in
a lifeless heap. Deishie turned to the archers and started strangly screaming at them.
"You killed him! I cannot believe any of you skum! Not just skum, murderous skum! It was a creature
you and I, now its dead!" While screaming, he was secretly drawing his sword.
"But Cap'n, you gave the ord-ahhh!" Deishie quickly grabed Snipeneck as he spoke and with one swift
motion severed his finger. Snipeneck fell to the ground clutching the bloody stump. All of the watchers
stood in a grim scilence. The mad ferrit turned to thewatchers.
"Boxworth, you are placed as second-in-command in Snipenecks place. No one shall ever speak of
this, in fact this never happened." Boxworth, strangely, was a squirrel. A former slave in fact. Soon after
he was captured, he was made part of the slavers. Deishie continued.
"Tomorrow, we will continue our search for a settlement. Until then, enjoy yerselves!"
