study guides:

These guides detail what we'll be covering with each unit and what to focus your own questions around. See if there are any issues you have ideas, questions, or concerns about.

  • What is Christian Justice?
How is Christian justice different from other ideas of justice? In this introduction we'll look at those various ideas, some of the principles our own country was founded on, as well as naming some obstacles to justice in the world today.

  • The Pastoral Circle
Recognizing that their is injustice in the world is one thing, but doing something about it is quite another! This unit will give us a framework to be more effective at building a just world. This is where you'll get a look at your semester project and choose a justice issue to examine more closely.

  • The Scriptural Mandate for Justice
What does the Bible really say about all this? Doesn't Jesus say the poor will always be with us? Then why bother!?! We'll look at some key insights from both the Old and New Testaments to see how Scripture is still relevant today.

  • Catholic Social Teaching
What is the Church doing and saying about all these justice issues? We'll trace the developments of the Church's thoughts on these matters as well as look at seven key themes or principles that can be applied in many cases.
in-class assignments/homework:
  • Ecological Footprint
Ever wondered how much "nature" your lifestyle requires? You're about to find out. This Ecological Footprint Quiz estimates how much productive land and water you need to support what you use and what you discard.

CAUTION: THIS QUIZ MAY SURPRISE YOU, SHOCK YOU, OR MAKE YOU THINK. PLEASE REMAIN CALM...BUT NOT TOO CALM!!

  •
  • How Much Do You Own?
The best way to begin living simply is to take stock of what you already have and assess what you need, what you can totally live without, and what is just plain unnecessary on any level. You'd be surprised at all the stuff you have that others could use!

  • Comprehending a Catholic Social Teaching Document
Documents by our bishops or the pope can sometimes be hard to grasp. This will help you discover the main points of Catholic Social Teaching and how to apply it to your life and society.

projects:
  • Pastoral Circle Project
Students will investigate an injustice through the lens of the Pastoral Circle. This will be an ongoing project the entire semester, with separate deadlines for the various parts.
