The quartz room is the last area illuminated for visitors. It is located off the left tunnel. The room is round. The ceiling is 15 feet high. Itīs diameter is about thirty feet accross. The walls and ceiling are composed almost entirely of quartz. Chico Rei and his slave gang found a great deal of gold here, hence its size. Marcelo is pearched on a ledge ten feet off the floor of the room. Under him is a tunnel entrance to the part of the mine which is not illuminated. We entered with only a flashlight and a lot of nerve. We were still worried about cave-ins.
