14. Rachel Ann Howard(3) Enness {Susan,(2) William(1)} was baptized 11 July 1813.[1] She married Andrew Barr Ellison (#19), the son of Anna (Barr) and John Ellison (see #11). Rachel and Andrew lived in Adams County, Ohio. Note that it was the record in the Bible given by this Rachel to her daughter which provided the first solid link to the Enness family. Her given names may eventually provide the link to the Enness line, as may that of her probable half-brother, John Brown Enness. Further information on this family, including their children, will be found under #19 Andrew Barr Ellison.
15. Ellen(3) Enness {Susan,(2) William(1)} was born in 1815[2] and married William M. Shiras (born 11 May 1810,[3] either in Pittsburgh or New Jersey,[4] the son of William Shiras[5]; his mother's name is unknown; died 28 June 1862[6]) as his second wife in Cincinnati on 12 February 1852.[7] Her baptism is not mentioned in Cincinnati Presbyterian Records, but she is listed as a member in 1828. (It is her portrait which was given to this compiler by Mrs. Hassinger.)
Depending upon the source, William M. Shiras was a stock broker, banker, in the real-estate business, or in the wholesale grocery business in Cincinnati with Henry Hanna. When he first arrived in Lawrence County, Ohio, from Pittsburgh before 1840, he was involved in the iron business there. In Cincinnati, the family lived at 289 West Court Street.[8]
William's will was requested from the Probate Court of Hamilton County, but the only document in existance is a docket sheet of the filings. All of the original documents were destroyed. When his will was filed for probate (case #7196) on 12 July, the bond required was $90,000. The Cincinnati Daily Gazette of Monday, 30 June 1862, says:
Mr. Shiras leaves a wife and five or six children to mourn his loss. He, however, leaves them amply provided for, having been successful in business and amassed a handsome fortune.
After William's untimely death (see Cincinnati newspapers of the time for the details[9]), Ellen probably remained in Cincinnati until 1870. About that time, she took her two young sons to Racine, Wisconsin, to attend school.[10] At the time of the 1880 census, she was living with her oldest step-son, Peter Shiras, who had married her niece, Rachel Means Ellison, in Ottawa, Kansas (see #31).
Ellen (Enness) Shiras died on 16 May 1885[11] in Newport, Kentucky. The funeral notice from the 19 May issue of the Kentucky State Journal says:
The funeral of Mrs. Ellen Shiras who died last Saturday at the good age of 70 years, will take place at 2 p.m. today from the residence of Mrs. Jas. T. Williamson, corner Front and Columbia Streets.
Her will, written 3 May 1875 and admitted 22 May 1885 [Vol. 40, page 287, of Hamilton County (#29837)] mentions
Mary S. Jones (formerly Mary Shiras), Peter Shiras, James O. Shiras, children of my said husband before his inter-marriage with me, and Charles E. Shiras and William M. Shiras, children since born, share and share alike.
A letter of her step-son, James O. Shiras, to a distant relative,[12] dated Cincinnati, 8 June 1885, says: "... a sad event has taken place -- the death of my dear and kind mother. Although a step-mother, she was as good and true as any mother could be. I knew no other as my own mother died when I was a baby of four months."
Issue:
28. i. Charles Enness Shiras.
29. ii. William Mortimer Shiras.
16. Susan Sterrett(3) Barr {William,(2) Samuel(1)} was born 8 February 1813[13] and baptized 25 July 1813.[14] On 19 August 1835[15] she married Dr. John C. Spencer [born 16 May 1810, probably in Cincinnati, the son of Oliver M. and Electra (Oliver) Spencer;[16] died 24 August 1856 in Cincinnati[17]]. John Spencer was chosen as the guardian for David McKnight Barr and William Barr, Susan's brothers and the minor sons of Mary (Barr) Barr and William Barr #9, when William died in 1837.[18] Susan Sterrett (Barr) Spencer died 16 Dec 1878.[19]
In addition to the children named below, there may have been others, including the Margaret Ellen Spencer whose name is written on the front of Mary Barr Memoir. The Spencer family was an early and prominent one in Cincinnati, and it is likely that more information on this family can be obtained in the future.
Issue:
i. E. Mary(4) Spencer {Susan Sterrett,(3) William,(2) Samuel(1)} was born 22 February 1837 in Cincinnati.[20] The notice of her marriage to James Taylor Williamson [born 20 April 1835 in Cincinnati, the son of George T. and Jane M. Williamson; died 11 July 1881][21] appeared in the Cincinnati Daily Gazette on 8 January 1855.[22] No issue of this marriage is known.
ii. William B.(4) Spencer was born about 1844 (6 in 1850 census and age 51 at death) and died 30 March 1895.[23] He is buried in the Spencer lot (Section 99, Lot 3) at Spring Grove Cemetery.
iii. Thomas(4) Spencer was born about 1849 (age 1 in 1850 census). His name does not appear with other members of his family in the records of Spring Grove Cemetery.
iv. John Collins(4) Spencer was born 12 January 1851 in Cincinnati and died 13 January 1904.[24] His place of residence is listed in Spring Grove records as New York City.
17. Ann Ellen(3) Barr {William,(2) Samuel(1)} was born about 1814[25] and baptized 16 September 1816.[26] On 19 October 1837 she was married to Alexander Finley,[27] born about 1813 in Maryland.[28] At the time of the 1850 census, she and her family (the name spelled FINLAY in that record) were living with her mother, Mary Barr, and aunt, Jane Keys. The names of her children are taken from that census record, which was found by Carol Mahan. Will we eventually learn that her husband was related to the family of her great-aunt, Jean McKnight, who probably married a Findlay?
Issue:
i. Anna(4) Finlay {Ann Ellen,(3) William,(2) Samuel(1)} was born about 1840.
ii. Rebecca(4) Finlay was born about 1843.
iii. William(4) Finlay was born about 1848.
iv. Ada(4) Finlay was born about 1849.
18. William V.(3) Barr {William,(2) Samuel(1)} was born in November 1816[29] and baptized 23 August 1817.[30] He was married to Jeanette E. Furch (born about 1830, died 21 May 1898, married second W. S. McKibben). His date of death is given in Spring Grove records as January 1847. However, if William V. Barr, Jr., was his son, and the son died in November 1857 at the age of 8 years and 5 months, as the cemetery records indicate, then the death date of William V., Sr., is incorrect. It should be noted that the date of interment for William V., Sr., is 27 February 1857, and that he was removed "from Iowa." This might indicate that his date of death, as listed in Spring Grove Records, is more likely to be incorrect. But while this is confusing, then the data on James K. B. Barr is even moreso. While his surname is given as Barr, his parents are listed on the records as W. S. and (-) McKibben. Was McKibben merely listed because he was the step- father, or was James' surname really McKibben? It is possible that a newspaper obituary from his place of death or an official death certificate could clear up this little mystery.
Issue:[31]
i. William V.(4) Barr {William V.,(3) William,(2) Samuel(1)} was born about June 1849 in Ravenswood, Virginia, and died 6 November 1857 in Washington, Missouri.
? ii. James K. B.(4) Barr was born about 1853 in Missouri and died 3 January 1881 in Augusta, Kentucky. He had been a resident of Chatton, Kentucky. He was unmarried.
19. Andrew Barr(3) Ellison {Anna,(2) Samuel(1)} was born 19 December 1808 in Manchester, Adams County, Ohio.[32] "...we believe that he, as a boy, and his boy companions, had more enjoyment than boys now do. At any rate, he had more sport in hunting." In 1830 he went to Cincinnati and worked for the firm of Barr & Lodwick (a business of William Barr?). On 23 October 1833[33] he married Rachel Ann Howard Enness (#14).
In 1834, the Ellisons moved to Lawrence County, Ohio, where he was a store-keeper and manager until 1840. At that time, they moved to Manchester where Andrew was in business until 1880.
His store in Manchester...was one of the institutions of the county. It was known far and wide. Mr. Ellison kept all kinds of merchandise...He was the principal merchant in the county...he practically kept a department store...During the early period of his merchandising in Manchester, he and Thomas W. Means went East together to buy their goods every year. During his business career no one ever visited Manchester without having his attention called to A. B. Ellison's store and without visiting it...His store stood on Front Street facing the river, and to all passing boats he and his store were familiar figures...No sketch of Mr. Ellison would be complete without mention of his loyalty to the Union during the Civil War. He never missed an opportunity to show a kindness to a Union soldier going to or returning from the war to their families at home. Mr. Ellison's wife died March 10, 1875, and thereafter he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Drennan, in Manchester. He retired from business in 1880, and from that until his death on the fifteenth of April, 1888, he enjoyed the society of his daughter's family and his old friends, without any cares, till the end came, with peace. He had the business qualities of his grandfather, Andrew, with the sterling virtues of his mother. All of Anna Barr's children were noted men and women, as a careful perusal of this book will show.
Issue:
30. i. Anna Elizabeth Ellison.
ii. Susan Barr(4) Ellison {Andrew Barr Ellison,(3) Anna,(2) Samuel(1)} was born in August 1837[34] in Ironton, Lawrence County, Ohio,[35] and died 7 November 1912 in Fredonia, Wilson County, Kansas.[36] She is buried in Manchester, Adams County, Ohio, where she lived most of her life. She was married to Samuel B. Drenan[37] sometime after 1870, when she appears with her father in the census of Manchester Township, Adams County. Samuel died about 1901, and Susan went to Fredonia to live with her niece, Anna (Herron) Flack, and family.
An obituary from the Portsmouth, Ohio, Daily Blade, says that she: "fainted at a D.A.R. reception a week before her death." It is this DAR connection which may confirm the Revolutionary service of William Barr (#1).
There were probably no children born of this marriage.
iii. John(4) Ellison is mentioned only in the article on "The Ellison Family" from Caldwell's Atlas from Nixon-Ellison Genealogy, cited above.
31. iv. Rachel Means Ellison.
20. Sarah(3) Ellison {Anna,(2) Samuel(1)} was born in 1810 and died in 1871.[38] She was married to Thomas W. Means [born about 1804, the son of John Means].[39] This family was one of the primary families in the development of the iron industry in southern Ohio. An 1887 newspaper article, reprinted in the above cited Hanging Rock History, says of the family:
In 1819 there went from Spartanburg, South Carolina, To Manchester...a certain man named John Means, carrying his slaves with him. He was an Abolitionist, but not being able to manumit his slaves in his native state, he sold his possessions there and, with his family, emigrated to the nearest point where he could set them free...In 1826 John Means built a charcoal furnace near his home and began the manufacture of pig iron. The Union, as he named it, was the first iron furnace north of the Ohio in this district. In Ashland your correspondent met Thomas W. Means, a son of the pioneer furnace builder. This gentleman, now eighty-three years old, has a vivid recollection of those days...In 1837 he leased the Union Furnace of his father, and ever since he has been connected with it as lessee and owner.
Another man who was involved in the Union Furnace was James Rodgers, the father of Elizabeth J. Rodgers, the first wife of William M. Shiras (see #15) and grandfather of Peter Shiras who married Rachel Means Ellison (#31).

iii. William(4) Means.
iv. Isabelle(4) Means.
v. Esther(4) Means.

21. Mary Keys(3) Ellison {Anna,(2) Samuel(1)} was born 25 January 1812 and died 14 May 1888.[41] On 19 June 1833 she married, as his second wife, William Ellison [born 19 June 1796 in Manchester, the son of Mary (Bratton) and John Ellison; died 1 November 1865].
William was in the shipping business with his brother, David, early in his life; but in 1831, David died and William went to Lawrence County, Ohio, as manager of the Mt. Vernon Furnace. He returned to Manchester in 1835, "practically retired from business."
Mr. William Ellison was a remarkable man in many respects. He was six feet three in height, and weighed nearly 200 pounds. He became a member of the Presbyterian Church when a youth, and remained one of its strongest pillars till the day of his death, being a Deacon in his latter years. He had nothing of the compromise about him, but was very positive in his convictions as to right and wrong. Politically, he was first a Whig, then an Abolitionist. He was a supporter of Freemont, and a member of the electoral college at Lincoln's second election. During his last illness he suffered for about ten days from typhoid pneumonia, and at last quietly passed away surrounded by his sorrowing family and sympathizing friends.[42]
Issue:
32. i. Mary Ann Ellison.
ii. Margarete(4) Ellison {Mary Keys Ellison,(3) Anna,(2) Samuel(1)} was born 28 September 1837 and died 25 November 1850.[43]

35. viii. Julia Morris Ellison.
22. Esther(3) Ellison {Anna,(2) Samuel(1)} was born 16 April 1817.[46] She married Hugh Means as his first wife. He was in the iron business in Ironton and later the president of the Ashland Bank in Ashland, Kentucky. After Esther's death on 23 July 1851,[47] he married Amanda Wilson.[48]

23. John(3) Ellison {Anna,(2) Samuel(1)} married first Nancy Baldwin. After her death, he married second her sister, Caroline Baldwin. His first two children were by his first wife; the last three by his second.[50]
From: Nixon-Ellison Genealogy, page 177. [Note the differences in the first name of the first wife and the middle name of son, John.]
John was born March 24, 1821, and died April 5, 1872. His first wife, Helena Baldwin, bore him two children: Andrew and John Preston. By his second wife, Caroline Baldwin, a sister of his first wife, he had three children: Helena, Esther, who married a Mr. Alexander, and Luvica Baldwin. Mr. John Ellison was a man of splendid business ability. He began life as a partner with his brother, A. B. Ellison, in a mercantile business at Manchester. In 1856 he started a private bank under the name of John Ellison, and conducted it till 1866, when the banking firm of J. Ellison & Company was established. Peter Shiras (see #31) and R. H. Ellison, subject of this sketch, forming the company part of the concern. In 1872 he organized the Manchester National Bank, but died before it began active operations.

On 2 June 1830 she married, as his first wife, Benjamin Sterrett [born 6 August 1801 in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, the son of Robert and Rosanna (McCune) Sterrett; died 22 June 1884, Glendale, Ohio]. He was the first cousin of Jane (Sterrett) Barr, wife of John T. Barr.
