Nafplio - from the castle

Nafplio is the original capital of modern Greece and is  located in the South Peloponnese (148 km SW of Athens). It was named after Nafplios, son of Poseidon.

Palamidi Castle watches over the village from the hill.
If you're daring, you can ascend the 999 steps to the top.
Takis and I drove there though!
This castle was completed in 1714.
Greeks regained it from the Turks on 30 November 1822.

The view from here is absolutely amazing.
(See the photos above!)

The Bourtzi sits alone in the harbor.
It was fortified in in 1473.

Greeks regained it from the Turks on 18 June 1822. Bourtzi served as a fortress until 1865.

It then became the residence of the hangmen who executed the convicts in Palamidi.
From 1930 to 1970 it served as a hotel.

Nafplio was one of my favorite places, second only to Sounio!
