The International Space Settlement Design Competition (SpaceSet for short) encourages teams of high school students to prepare designs for cities in space where over 10,000 people will live. The teams utilize real-world skills to complete their proposals. The first competition was held in July of 1994 in Washington, DC, where the WHS team won. Ever since, each year's team has made it to the finals.

" The 1998 Qualifying Competition teams will design Aresam, the first Foundation Society
settlement in orbit around the planet Mars. Aresam will be a relatively large community (up to
18,000 population). It will provide a base for development of future Foundation Society interests
on Mars, and provide services to the growing number of mining operations in the asteroid belt
between Mars and Jupiter."
