Reference Book List

You want to write but you don't know where to start. Well, here's a short list of books that might help you. If you have any other favorite books, software, or online sites you'd like to add to this list, just let me know.

Get a decent book on grammar. They're not hard to find. The library's got hundreds of them. They can be found at book stores, college and library book sales, even garage sales. Get one. You've got a problem if you don't think you need a grammar book. Hey, I do have grammar books and I still make mistakes. Why should you be immune to such things?

The Wordwatcher's Guide to Good Writing and Grammar -- Quick answers to pesky grammar and usage Problems by Morton S. Freeman. Writer's Digest Books, Cincinnati, Ohio. Copyright 1990.

Strunk and White -- this is a very good grammar book. It's been setting the standards for grammar for many years.

Rules for Writers: A Concise Handbook, second edition by Diana Hacker. A Bedford Book, St. Martin's Press, New York. Copyright 1988. This book has it all. I love this book.

Buy a grammar program for your computer, or not, since most word processors come with their own.

Buy a dictionary. Buy several. Use the dictionary that comes with your word processor. After you've bought your dictionary use it!

Get a Thesaurus. Yes, you do need one. After all, there's only one way to spell relief, but fifteen different ways to say it.

Roget's Superthesaurus 2nd Edition by Marc McCutcheon. ISBN-0-89879-775-6

There are a lot of books on style, plot, characterization, etcetera. You can't go wrong with a book that will help you improve your writing style. Here's a book series I particularly recommend. I don't have the whole series, but I do have the ones I think help me the most in my writing. You can find the books at your local Barnes and Nobles or Little Professor Bookstores, or either store can order them for you. As far as I know, the entire series is still in print. I like this series because the books are written in a simple style that's easy to understand. Well, if I can understand them, they can't be too hard!

All of these books are printed by Writer's Digest Books, Cincinnati, Ohio.

by Martin Roth. ISBN 0-89879-564-8

If your characters are constantly getting stabbed, shot, or even sprained ankles, Grey's Anatomy is a must for you. A bullet in the shoulder does not usually go straight through and come out the other side, hitting nothing but flesh. The bullet will run into things, carom off them, chip bone and end someplace else. Maybe it will leave the injured person's body, and maybe it won't. Also, a knife in the gut is a nasty thing, cutting into all sorts of vital and interesting organs. Yuck. You can also go over to The Cascade Hospital for all sorts of wonderful tips, but if you're like me, you don't always do your writing on the computer, or at least not one with 'net access, so having a book handy is a must.
