Numerology

Numerology is believed to be one of the oldest forms of occult lore. Its origins cannot be traced, but the Babylonian, the ancient Egyptians, and many other people are all thought to have held theories of the occult significance of numbers. This concept is closely related to astrology, and to the observation of numbers found in natural phenomena - the five senses, the seven colours of the spectrum, the 12 signs of the zodiac and so on. Numbers were especially important to the Cabalists, both in ancient times and in the Middle Ages. The Cabala, the secret mystical lore of the Jews, contains a magico-philosophical science of numbers known as gematria, based on the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet.

The basis of Numerology

Although there are some variations between the numerological systems that have come down to the present day, most seem to be based on the theories of the Greek mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras. He believed that the whole universe was ordered mathematically, and that as everything in it could be expressed in terms of numbers, numbers were therefore the key to the universe. Numerology, which was also known as numeromancy or arithomancy, used to be practiced as a form of general divination; today its practitioners are mainly concerned with character analysis and potential. The basis of numerology is the belief that numbers - especially the primary numbers from 1 - 9 - exert an influence on every facet of our lives and personalities. Each person has numbers that relate to the significant events in his life. The most important being the birth number and the name number.

Personality

Many of the characteristics associated with the primary numbers are related to personality, so allowing you to access the character of any individual whose name or birth number you have calculated. When you use the number for other purpose (for example, to find out if a certain plan will be a good one) their meanings should be interpreted according to their more general characteristics.

Birth numbers
Your most important number is your birth number. This is calculated by adding up the numbers of your date of birth. For example, if you were born on June 11, 1977, add 6 (because June is the sixth month)+1+1+1+9+7+7, which gives 32. Then add 3+2, giving 5. Number 5 is therefore your birth number. This number is of course unchangeable, and it shows the numerical influence at birth. By looking up the meanings ascribed to 5, you can find your natural characteristics and basic personality traits.

Name numbers

To find your name number, convert the letters of your name to figures, using number-letter equivalents. You should work from the name you usually use, not necessarily your full, formal name.

J E N N Y B R O W N
1+5+5+5+1=17,1+7=8 2+2+7+6+5=22,2+2=4 \8+4=12,1+2=3
Jenny Brown's name number is therefore 3.

A person's name number tends to show acquired or developed traits, and unlike the birth number, it can of course be changed. It is considered ideal if a person's birth and name numbers coincide; this will reinforce the characteristics of the birth number, but in a harmonious way.

Number-Letter equivalents
The older system of number-letter equivalents below omits the number 9. It was omitted because it was held to be of special significance; in the Cabalistic tradition it was considered to be the numerical equivalent of the name of God.
