Background

Devin was born to James and Rebecca Kant in 1990. He was an only child and grew up in the sun and sand of southern California. His father, a cargo pilot that flew cross pacific routes and wasn't home much because his job didn't allow it, but neither him nor him mother minded much. Dev's father and him had a rather unigue relationship. More like best friends then father and son. His mother worked part time to help subliment income. The Kant's weren't rich, but they weren't poor either. His early life was nothing spectacluar either. School, friends and messing around like any normal American kid. Dev's parents never pushed him in any direction as to what to do with his life. It would be this lack of pushing that would eventually draw him to do what he did.

The years went on and Devin got older and went into High School. During High School he decided he was going to join the military. So he applied to Colorado State to join their Army ROTC program there. His parents weren't too happy with his decision, but it was his decision none the less. For 2 years he studied there. Going for a degree in American History, as well as ROTC training. Then just before his second year ended, he recieved the phone call that would change his life forever.

The call he recieved was that his fathers plane had gone down in a storm near Hawaii. The wrekage was never found, leaving an empty grave to sit back in the states. At the age of 19, Devin had just had his world turn upside down. He was excused from finals and made his way home. Upon returning home he found something he was not expecting to see. His mother had commited suicide the night before Devin returned home and found her, collapsed on the floor of her bedroom, long dead. Devin turned to the only people he had left, his mothers family in L.A. The only problem was, they would not help. Devin's mother had long ago run away and been dishoned by them. They wanted nothing to do with his mothers son. The pain in him from his parents death's and his realtives brush off would plague and gnaw at him for a long time.

Bitter and alone, Devin burried his mother and packed his bags. Not knowing were to go or what to do. When watching the news a few hours before he left, he heard a story about the great spaceship, the SDF-1. He grabed his suitcase, walked out the door and caught the next flight to Macross Island.

He got a job doing basic plumbing work for the city the day after he arrived. It turned out that job would save his life. The day the Zentradei attacked the ship and the island, he was working in a shelter. When the ship folded, taking the island along with it, the shelter he was in survived intact. After the RDF had rescued everyone and placed everyone in the hold that would become Macross City, Dev bounced around from job to job for a few months before finally decided he would join the RDF.

His first inclination was to fly, like his father, but he knew that the people he would get close to would most likely get killed and he didn't think he'd be able to handle any more pain. His next choice was Infantry, but the RDF had no infantry on the SDF-1 so he finally chose Communications. The decision was a simple one for him. They needed more help then anyone else. It was a decision he has never regreted. A few weeks after enrolling, he was called up to attend the RDF Academy.

His academy class was a good one. Deserai, Rachele, Heather, Tyranna, Jesse and a few others, most of who would advance quickly through the ranks. Devin felt like an outsider the whole time. He intentionally tried to keep his distance and stayed quiet most of the time, not wishing to bother anyone and never asking anything, which drove him into lonelyness. The fear of more pain from their deaths keept him away. He tried, until he meet a man who wanted to become a Veritech Pilot and would later be killed in a training accident, Takashi. There was something about the man that struck a cord with the lonely Devin. Takashi became Dev's only friend during his stay in the academy, though many of the people in his class he would eventually become friends with. During that time, Dev worked hard and would graduate early from the academy and be given his post in the CIC.

Devin sat in the CIC for many a battle. Doing the best job he knew he could do. His job consumed him, and after hearing of Takashi's death during training, his job became his life. He never had allowed himself the time to come to grips with his parents death, and now Takashi's just added more. He worked hard, hard as could be and never made a mistake.

Then one day, on the Observation Deck, he meet a women by the name of MacKenzie, who would change his life and eventually become one of his good, if not his best friend. A few months after meeting her, Devin made a mistake at work, a big mistake.

During a battle with an attacking Zentradei force, Devin made a mistake and opened the hangar doors on the Daedalus. Do to a miss communication between him and a destroid pilot, the wrong doors were opened and Zent pods stormed into the ship and penetrated to Macross City and rampaged around in it. After the pods were cleaned out, Devin was demoted and forced to help clean up the city. Upon steping out of the turbolift, he walked into a riot. During the riot, he recieved a few broken ribs and a gash across one of his arms. He felt terrible. The riot was caused because he made a mistake. At that point, he thought his career was over and he would end up going back to job hopping again. That was not to be, eventually his rank would be returned, but doubt lingered in him from that moment on.

A few days later, while drinking in the Black Dragon with Mack, a discussion ensued and at one point, a near argument broke out. The argument ended with Mack verbally reaming Dev to the point that had she said one more thing to him, he'd have broken down in the Dragon. Instead he went back to his room and finally allowed himself to accept his parents deaths. From that point on, his guilt, pain and anger were gone. He still misses his parents, but it doesn't hurt like it did.

Time went on and things got interesting. The SDF-1 returned to Earth, Ontario was destroyed during a Zent attack and the SDF-1 was ordered back into Earth orbit.

One day, he was ordered down to the Prometheous Ready Room and learned he was to take part in the exploration of some asteroid. The exploration of the Asteroid took 2 trips. During the second trip the veritech escorts were destroyed by Zent pods and the group on the asteroid scrambled around some strange hangars trying to escape the pods. Eventaully, the pods withrdrew and the group was recused. What happened afterwards was even worse. Some strange flu type disease began to spread, an unwanted visitor from the asteroid, nearly killing Devin and many other people. Several weeks later, the flu was cured and life tried to return to normal for Devin. Including a 3rd trip to the asteroid to find out more about it. That trip ended with the asteroid being self destructed and nearly killing the party.

Devin decided no more adventures and was happy to just sit in the CIC from that point on. But fate wouldn't let him. After the Zents under Breetai allied with the SDF-1, a small group of RDFers were sent to help strip a Zent cruiser that was unsalvagable. It was a trap and Devin was nearly killed when he was slapped by a zent and bounced off a wall, breaking several ribs and punctering a lung. The only reason he survived in his mind is because of MacKenzie. She was his support through the whole ordeal and he has never forgotten that. He owes Mack his life and would willing give it to her if she asked. The RDF high command decided that because he controlled himself under the pressure of the situation, dealing with his injuries and fixing the backpack radio he had brought with him, he was awarded a Silver Star and promoted to Sergeant.

Upon being rescued by the RDF, he spent the next week in sickbay and got out just in time to participate in the battle with the main Zentradei fleet. During the battle, he was talking to one of his Academy classmates, Deserai and she said something to him which surprissed him and made him think. He had always had feelings for her but always hid them, too afraid that she would die. A few days after the battle, he talked to her and a relationship was started. A year later it would pretty much end when Devin was transfered to Yellowstone Base, promoted to Ensign and made XO of Communications there. Though while his relationship had technially ended, Devin did love her and still loved her.

After 2 years at Yellowstone, Devin was promoted to Lieutenant and given command of Communications at the small New Albuquerque Base. One day when escorting some new arrivals to their barracks he ran into Deserai again. He nearly paniced but managed to keep his head and asked to speak to her. Needless to say, the relationship started up again and after a few months together, Devin proposed to her. She accepted and the next day found out she was pregnant. Things seemed good, until about a month or so before the wedding when she suddenly backed out and broke everything off. Devin was highly upset, spending the next several nights in a druken stupor and taking a week of leave from work. He really didn't know what to make of it all and he tried to move along.

Luckily the RDF provided a small break from it all. He was sent up to Yellowstone for just over a week, a small conference with the quadrants other Communication Commanding Officers. The break was needed by Devin, and he managed to get his life back on track a bit. After getting back, he was buried in paperwork and worked his butt off for several weeks, totally forgetting the troubles that were not all that far in the recent past.

Devin has partially gotten over being left by his ex-fiance. It hurts like hell, but he goes on. He's had lots of pain in his life and this is just more. He's a survivor, and he's already starting to pull his life out of the gutter it dropped into not all that long ago.

NOTE: At his point I stoped playing Devin. I just decided that he needed to be retired. I loved playing him but it's time to move on to other things, so I leave you with what will happen to him.

Devin will finish out the year in New Al, before putting in a transfer back to the SDF-1, and eventually to the SDF-3 and the REF. A year after he returns to New Macross, he'll meet and fall in love with Amanda LaBrie. Before the SDF-3 leaves, they'll marry and have two kids. Rebecca and Erick. He'll stay with the SDF-3 all throughout the Sentinels, in command of Communications on the SDF-3 with the rank of Commander, and come back with it when it returns to Earth. At that point, he'll be well into his 50's, maybe even his 60's. His wife, daughter, her husband and his 3 grandchildren will be with him, his son will be on the Dakronh which was sent back with the REF fleet to liberate the Earth from the Invid. He'll retire shortly afterwards, with the rank of Captain since nearly 40 years of constant warfare have made him a very tired man. He'll live out the rest of his life in a small town with his wife. Then a few days before his 83rd birthday, he'll die quietly in his sleep, followed a week later by Amanda.
