THE VIDEO GAME
In which I offer up a potential reason behind your existance.
THE GAME OF LIFE Theory: Every human on the planet, at some level, wishes to lower the processes taking place in their mind. We do so through various rituals, such as watching tv, reading books, playing video games, zoning out in hobbies, etc. In each and every case, we are using only a fraction of the amount of brain power we are actually capable of. Also, in many cases, we are using almost no brain function whatsoever, save for the good ol' alpha-state "zoning out" syndrome. (I only call it a syndrome because, in the case of tv, video games, and the like, I don't think it's neccessarily a good thing). The video game is the best example to use for this theory. Let's say you sit down and start to play an adventure-roleplaying game for a while. You have just imbued the character that you are playing with your own consciousness. You have used your mind to enter the universe that the video game has constructed for you, and you use this character to move through and manipulate the surroundings of that miniverse. That universe is something that's much less complex than your own universe, because it was constructed with the limitations of the video game system that you are playing it on. It is also, in this example, a universe in which bad things may (and likely will) happen to your character. Yet you do not actually "care" for this character as you care for your actual person. You are, in a sense, the subconscious of the character, telling it what to do, where to go, but all the while it acts upon the premise that it is doing all these things of it's own will, despite it's lack of consciousness. You catching on? What if we are the characters in this great proverbial video game? Think of your subconscious as being a great being, employing such traits as omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence (at least on some level). What would you be if you had all these things? Well, for one, you'd likely be bored. No limitations whatsoever, hence nothing to strive for, hence nothing to actually enjoy. But isn't that why you play a video game? To set limitations for yourself, and hence allow yourself to have a temporary goal, despite that chance of failure, and even -- from your character's perspective -- death. So your subconscious (your "soul") decides that it needs to play the Game of Life. It creates a character, YOU, and imbues it with no memories or awareness of the truth behind it's existance, and then begins to manipulate it and play it throughout the Game of Life, in which many limitations are placed upon your person, including the limited timespan that most games have, and the chance of failure. Even, as it were, the option of being good, evil, neutral, and any number of moral obligations (or lack thereof). Just a thought...
