What is Traveller ?

Glad you asked. Traveller is a science fiction role-playing game originally created by the now-defunct Game Designers' Workshop. Traveller was one of the first, and possibly the best, science fiction roleplaying game ever published. Since its first printing nearly 20 years ago, Traveller has been through four revisions of the rules system.

The original is now referred to as Classic Traveller by its fans. It was a very basic rules system, with almost no background information included with the rules. Supplements and adventures added to a rich adventuring environment known as the Imperium.

MegaTraveller
, published in 1987, was the first major rewrite of the rules, expanding the systems for combat, character generation and starship construction, and adding a coherent and comprehensive task resolution system. It also expanded on the history of the Imperium, effectively ending it in rebellion and war.

The history of the Imperium continued in Traveller: The New Era, published in 1992-93. The game's history jumped forward 70 years, placing it well after the end of the rebellion and the collapse of nearly every interstellar empire in the game's milieu.

The latest game in the Traveller line is Marc Miller's Traveller, also known as T4 among fans. It is the first release from Imperium Games, and takes a major step backward in the history of the Imperium. The game is set in the early years of the Third Imperium, at the end of an extended period of an interstellar 'Dark Age' (the 'Long Night'). It is an age of exploration, hope and promise.
