Martian Successor Nadesico

Type: TV Series
Genre: Sci-fi, Parody

"It's 200 years in the future", and Earth is (surprise!) at war with its neighboring aliens, the "Jupiter Lizards". While in the process of expanding from the Moon and Mars into Venus and Jupiter, the Mars colony is attacked by an enemy who seem to originate from Jupiter (which is supposedly only visible to us through an alien warp gate). Naturally, Earth plans to retaliate with an upgraded armed force, and a corporation called NERGAL produces, among other things, the battleship Nadesico. Shorthanded, NERGAL makes do with whoever they can find, and so Nadesico comes to be manned by an unusually young crew of civilians, commanded by 20-year-old Yurika Misamaru. Pilot Akito Tenkawa, survivor of the attack on Mars, finds himself back in the seat of an Aestivalis unit aboard the Nadesico, against his will (he just wants to be a cook).
Crew of the Nadesico
Cast and crew of Martian Successor Nadesico.
There is no mistaking Nadesico for a serious war story or a space opera. Nadesico has more things in common with Ranma 1/2 or Tenchi Muyo (and yes, it does feature a mostly-female crew who are all interested in one guy) than with Gundam 0083 or Macross Plus. The result is a light-hearted, shameless parody of the genre (the characters are hooked on an anime called Gekiganger) with elements of Alien-related Mystery and a Sinister Arms Corporation thrown in for good measure.

Macross 2

Type: TV Series
Genre: War Story

Macross 2 is supposedly a sort of a parallel storyline that takes Macross in a different direction. The result is a plot that is surprisingly similar to that of the original Macross story. This time, the enemy is the Marduk, a race related to the Zentraedi that are micronized and use Emulators, female members who sing music that control their dronelike soldiers, making them immune to the "Minmei Attack". UN Spacy tries to cover up the fact that they have no strategy to defeat the Marduk, but news reporter Hibiki stumbles on the ultimate scoop: Ishtar, an emulator, who ultimately holds the solution to stopping the destruction of the Earth. Ace pilot Sylvie Jeena becomes involved as the Marduk attempt to retrieve Ishtar.

A six-part OAV, Macross 2 has been dubbed and subtitled, and an RPG has been made based on it. The series gives Macross a new look, with updated mecha and ship designs, but offers nothing else, as its plot is fairly derivative of the Macross movie.

Macross Plus

Type: Original Animated Video and Movie
Genre: War Drama, Love Story

Originally a four-part OAV and later put together into a movie, Macross Plus occurs between the original Macross saga and Macross 7. On planet Eden, Project Supernova is being conducted to select the UN Spacy main fighter to replace the VF-11. This puts seat-of-the-pants flyboy Isamu Dyson and half-Zentraedi Guld Goa Bowman flying opposite each other as test pilots for the competing teams. Meanwhile, virtual idol Sharon Apple arrives on Eden for a concert, along with "producer" Myung Fang Long. The situation reunites the three former friends and ignites a series of conflicts between them. In the background, forces are at work that will put the two test pilots in a duel over Myung.

YF-19 and YF-21
Fierce competition between the YF-21 and YF-19 is further fueled by the rivalry between its pilots.
Directed by Shoji Kawamori, Macross Plus is probably one of the best OAVs of the late 1990s, combining hand-drawn art, computer-generated animation and a soundtrack with diverse styles in a well-orchestrated set pieces of mecha action. As is typical with Kawamori's work, the action is interspersed with episodes of languid reflection. Being shorter than the typical run for OAVs, the series struggles to fit characterization and dramatic plot into its four parts. The movie adds extra footage that address this.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory

Type: TV Series
Genre: War Story, Space Opera

Young MS pilot Kou Uraki gets in the tough position of being in the hanger when a high-powered, nuclear-equipped Gundam mobile suit is stolen by Jion ace Anavel Gato. The next thing you know, ensign Uraki is fighting the battle of his life while his friends and his base are being destroyed. Gato escapes with the nuke and now it's up to Uraki and the crew of the White Base-class Alvion ship to get the stolen mecha back.
Gundam Unit 01 versus Unit 02
Pilots Gato (Gundam 02) and Uraki (Gundam 01) face off in close combat. Delars Pilot Gato on Gundam Unit 02
Zeon is reborn through the efforts of Delars ace Gato, piloting the nuclear-capable Gundam prototype.
That's the story more or less, but this OVA has also quite a bit of inter-crew fights and tension and manages to mix action with drama extremely. It's perhaps the best Gundam series of them all. The OVA's were condensed into a film, The Last Blitz Of Jion.
