David H. Ray was raised in a single parent household. Unfortunately, the single parent was his father, an ex-army chaplain. The years of stress, disease, and toxins had
taken their toll on his father's mind, and he ran the house as a combination boot camp, prison, and pulpit. Without his mother to act as a balancing force (she was killed in the crossfire during a gang war), his father unleashed unrelenting fury on his young son. He was beaten physically, crushed mentally, whipped spiritually, and literally imprisoned for weeks at a time. Whenever his father felt 'the devil had taken his son', he locked him into a wood chest for long periods. While his son was locked in the chest, he would thunder about the Scripture, pound on the lid, and douse the box with holy water. To this day, David is severely claustrophobic and slightly hydrophobic (although his wife helps him stay in control with medication). Whenever he tried to fight back, his father would beat him into unconsciousness. It was only through his father's knowledge of medicine that he survived any of the beatings. On the positive side, the constant pressure, training, and exercise from his father's militaristic rearing made him strong, fast, and single minded. He blames himself for his father's death which is very
reasonable; as his father sank to floor from a brain aneurysm, his last words were "Get me to the hospital, you worthless demon spawn." His father was dead on arrival; David was sixteen at his father's death.
His bulk and speed made him a natural for Solo work. Arasaka hired him as a grunt, but his single minded attitude helped him to rise through the ranks. Unfortunately, his raw abilities were not enough, soon he had received enough cyberware to let him up a few more rungs. They taught him to use his father's powerful force to help him fight off stress and fear (hence the high interrogation resistance). Eventually, he realized he needed to work on his mind to get any further in the Arasaka culture. He turned to mastering tactics. He read and studied every great tactician from ancient times to modern and
always with his father's ghost sneering at his shoulder. His conviction that he was already going to hell allowed him more freedom to use his men as cruelly, yet effectively, as he wanted. He chose his code name from the bookmark his father used in his pocket bible. Late in his career, he met Sue Berc. She was everything his father had taught that women should be, subservient, beautiful, meek, and obedient. He is confused about fatherhood but tries to be the best father he knows how. Unfortunately, this means his love is often cold and cruel interspersed with tremendous emotion. When his children (The Silver Savior Triplets) came down with the plague, he considered it
proof that he was evil and was on the verge of suicide. When the children came out with incredible power, he took it as a chance for redemption. He is determined that this will succeed. He set out the plan like a military exercise, and so far it has gone off well. He has left Arasaka amicably (an amazing feat, in and of itself) and set up the Church
of the Silver Savior. He allows his wife to handle the initiation, legal niceties, and mind control, but he holds the reigns of power (in his children's name of course) and organizing the training of members and angels. He considers this stage of his life to be the most crucial in his history and will not give it up for anything.
In person, David is a very imposing character. His huge frame (7' 2") is usually clad in austere grey. He keeps his black hair cropped to military style and his face clean shaven.
When talking, he tends to speak as if from a pulpit and even quotes scripture extensively. He tends to make plans for countless eventualities and becomes upset when anyone breaks routine. In contrast, he is personally prone to sudden fits of incredible anger. He loves his wife and children as much as he can and will defend them to the death and beyond, but his definition of an attack and a defense may be a bit extreme for many. When fighting, he prefers to use his fists and close hand to hand fighting to a long range attack, but (if in control of his temper) will take advantage of distance when he can. He is tremendously dangerous and single minded; beware of getting on his bad side.
