They say a picture is worth a thousand words. However, when I first saw the following picture, I was struck speechless. If you're a Led Zeppelin fan, you'll know where I'm coming from as soon as the image loads below:

I scanned this amazing image from the booklet which came with Elvis Command Performances - The Essential 60's Masters, Volume 2. I don't know when the movie was released, but Elvis recorded the tracks for Spinout in February 1966. So, I must ask the following questions: 1., when did Jimmy Page buy HIS Gibson double neck, and 2., did Jimmy ever see this poster? After all, Led Zep played a lot of Elvis tunes in their gigs (check out any number of bootlegs), so they must have been fans of the King. Yes, I know that the likely reality was that Elvis needed a guitar for the photo session, and someone tossed this Gibson his way. But think about the odds of a guitar like this double necked beast simply sitting around at a photo shoot? Could this poster have somehow influenced Jimmy Page? Just another amazing rock and roll coincidence ... or is it? New information is brought to my attention! |
