Chapter 4

Dawit crept out of the dormitory. She was going to meet Obi-Wan. She hoped he’d heard the message she’d given him. She sat by the fountain outside the walls of the Temple. Now she would wait. Wait as she had for. . .

Onxyi. The fountain looked beautiful under the Coruscant evening sky. Onxyi was tired from his practice that morning. He sat next to her on the rim of the fountain. She hadn’t seen him in years. Onxyi was entering his last stage of Padawanship. Dawit was about to enter her first. Onxyi’s blade glowed a brilliant blue. He turned it off when he saw Dawit. He had been given the crystal for the energy source when he saved a king on a campaign with his Master. He turned to her and said,

“Father wanted me to put this in my lightsaber.  I found my own stone but, well, I think that you could use this. Nefra is old and probably won’t do many missions or campaigns.”

“Thank you.” She held the stone in her hand. The stone was bigger than her hand. Only, it wasn’t a stone. It was a chunk of raw amber. Amber was rarely used for an energy source. It was beautiful and pure. It would make an excellent color for her blade. Her mind was filled with questions. She said, “I’ve wanted to be a Jedi since before I was officially tested.  Why did my test turn out negative then, and the one I took today turned out positive?” It was a simple, yet difficult question. Onxyi thought carefully before he answered her.

“The council found you are very skilled in Illusion and Mimicry. You hid your own ability from them. I’m not supposed to tell you this, but I think you already know. You’re a natural healer and you can see some of the future. You saw what was going to happen to me today, didn’t you?”

“Yes, I didn’t know what I saw. It was blurry and I felt pain and I, I, I. . .” she trailed off, confused by her own memories. Onxyi put his arm around her to comfort her.

“You’ll learn how to control the visions. Nefra will teach you.” Onxyi said.

Suddenly Dawit was facing Obi-Wan. She jumped back in surprise. Smirking Obi-Wan said,

“Nice to see you to. I got your message. Why did you want to me to meet you here for?”

“I had to tell you something. Did anyone see you leave?” Dawit said as she looked around the plaza. Obi-Wan’s eyebrows quizzically arched.

“No one saw me leave. What do you want to tell me?”

“Not here.” She looked over both shoulders, hair swaying. “Let’s go to the lower levels. It’s safer to talk there.” Obi-Wan followed her down to the walkway. He looked over his shoulder and said,

“Is somebody following us?”

“No. Why?”

“I sensed that someone was following us.”

“I didn’t sense a thing.” Pausing she added, “Let’s hurry anyway.”

“You’re nervous. I distinctly sense that you’re nervous.”

“I just don’t want to be caught off campus with you. It would be a reprimand for you and a sure fire dismissal for me.” They had reached the lower levels. It was a dark and cramped.  Dawit motioned for Obi-Wan to sit next to her on an old pile of old, moldy blankets. “I wanted to tell you that I think I will be leaving. I saw an argument in the council room. I saw you there and Qui-Gon Jinn. Henyic was on a council seat. Wait, he’s not on a council seat now, I must have seen the future. It was so clouded I could only sense emotions. There was defiance, hope, and fear. I couldn’t see who else was there. It could have been anyone! I’m sorry, this has no use to you. I just needed to talk to someone.”

“It has every use to me, and I’m here to listen. You know it is the future. Who did you sense fear from?”

“I don’t know.”  Dawit clouded memory began to waiver. The strain of keeping the visions clear made Dawit cry out in pain. She leaned against his shoulder and cried. She felt lost and alone. Obi-Wan knew that his emotions would betray him too. To leave Dawit without her truly knowing how he felt. They had almost kissed once. This goodbye kiss would have to last until they saw each other again. Their eyes met and at that moment they knew they were destined to be together. Lips gently brushed against each other. It became deeper and deeper. They parted quickly. Dawit blushed and looked away. Obi-Wan had a grin from ear to ear.

“We’d better get back before they miss us.” Obi-Wan said, getting up and dusting himself off.

“What about Garret? He’ll miss the morning practice if I go to the review. I could try for a double illusion, but that really takes me back. I can’t hold it for more than two hours. Would you help me?”

“How could I help you?”

“You could partner up with my illusion. I think I can hold a double-pike thrust routine for awhile.” Dawit’s blue eyes filled with hope. Obi-Wan’s heart filled with love. It was a kind of love that was indescribable. His thoughts jumbled together. Questions entered his mind. He wondered if he loved her because of her, or because she needed his help. Qui-Gon warned him about these feelings, but he didn’t care. Obi-Wan was ready to follow Dawit to the ends of the galaxy. Dawit sensed this change immediately. “Don’t let your emotions get to you. They’ll mislead you.”

“What emotions? I’ll help you.” Obi-Wan promised.  They kissed again and parted. They went their separate ways to the dormitories. Dawit slept fitfully that night with her conflicting emotions for home and Obi-Wan.
