Create a new track.

Create recolor clip.

Open the settings window, make sure brightness and contrast are checked.

Move the black (contrast) bar to this setting:

And move the white bar (brightness) to this setting:

You can now see this in the track window:

Now it's starting to look better. Now we are ready to composite it to the original image. Close the track window, and create a new track.

Create a paster clip.

Now, go into the settings, and set it exactly like this:(settings may vary according to lighting conditions in other images, play around a bit, to get the settings right with them)

This should be what you see now:

That looks much better. Now, it's time to make Vader's saber.
