Faith is something beyond mere belief. Mulder believes- he knows the aliens, the conspiracy, and all of those other things which are considered fantasies by most of the populsyion are there. If he can't immediately see it, if the truth is suppressed, he still knows it is there. Mulder has seen the aliens many times. His previous hypnosis has uncovered it for him. And he believes. But he does not have faith. After Gethesmaine, he had let himeself be convinced that aliens probably did not exist. True, everyone has weak moments, but if Mulder had any kind of lapse in this issue, it was his faith which weakened.

Scully has faith- a conviction stronger than mere belief, a conviction sometimes based on only itself, a conviction that will not die. Her faith is represented by the cross she wears around her neck, the cross Mulder was so suprised to discover in Ascentation. The partners believe this and that and the other thing. They have faith in each other- nothing will ever destroy that.

In One Breath, Mulder believed that Scully would make it back to his world. Yet he did not have faith- his leaning against the doorframe and crying for Scully in the dark proved that. Scully, fortunately, found strength enough in his beliefs to make it back. But faith is something they rarely have in each others or their own physical state. Mulder and Scully can only find faith in the more profound things.

Mulder and Scully are driven by their belief. They are ruled by their faith.

If you know any pictures of Scully's cross, her symbol of faith, please send them to Aniad.
