The famous just-now-returned poster in Mulder's office symbolizes Mulder's desire. "I want to Believe" is his mantra. Do you rembember how unhappy he has been every time he was not believing, every time he said "I'm not sure if I believe in that anymore?" Belief is one of the central themes of The X-Files. Belief in something not immediately tangible is what drives the X-Files, Mulder, and Scully, to where they end up. They and what they stand for are based on something which they have not even always sure have been there.

Yet belief is not faith. You must trancsend upwards one level to reach faith.
