Where Do Chipmunks Live?
Chipmunks live primarily inwoodland and scrub areas of North America. Unlike squirrels, chipmunks spend most of their time on the ground although they can climb very well. They dig burrows in protected areas. They dig with their front paws, kicking dirt out with their hind feet or pushing it with their heads. Usually, the burrow will have one main entrance. Except for mother chipmunks with a litter of little 'munks, chipmunks live alone and will defend the area around their burrow from other chipmunks. Some chipmunks will have a single room in which they sleep store food and hibernate. Others dig many food chambers connected by tunnels. they line their burrows with leaves and grasses to make a nest.
After storing up food in the summer and fall, chipmunks hibernate in their burrows during the cold days of winter. They do not sleep straight through the winter, but wake up and dine on their stored nuts and grains to build up their body fat before going back to sleep.
