The Star Wars Encyclopedia
by Stephen J. Sansweet
Price: $34.96
Hardcover - 400 pages 1 Ed edition (June 1998)
This book is a definitive reference of the Star Wars Universe. It draws together data from films, radio dramas, novels, short stories, computer games, and more.

From science and technology to history and geography; from culture and biography to ecology and cosmology; from "abo" and "Abrax" to "zwil" and "Zirtran's Anchor," this all-encompassing, fully illustrated, alphabetical reference covers all the elements which have developed and expanded the Star Wars universe, creating a rich and diverse history that spans millennia. Its scope ranges from the renowned and infamous ("Luke Skywalker," "Darth Vader") to the obscure and enigmatic ("Tnun Bdu"); from the history of the Sith Wars to the Galactic Civil War that pit the Rebel Alliance against the Empire. It introduces us to the natives and customs of planets as diverse as Tatooine and Dagobah, and even to the secrets and beliefs of the Jedi Knights.
This massive reference also includes the complete timeline of major events in Star Wars history.

This book is written by the author of other guides and reference Star Wars books, like "From Concept To Screen To Collectible" and "The Secrets Of Shadows Of The Empire". And also a collaborator of the magazines "Star Wars Insider" and "Star Wars Galaxy Collector"(formerly "Star Wars Galaxy Magazine")

Rogue Squadron (X-Wing, Book 1)
by Michael A. Stackpole
Price: $4.79
Paperback (February 1996)
The X-wing series is the longest series of books (and as a matter of fact also of comics) inside the Star Wars Universe, and it keeps growing!.

Throughout the series, we follow the adentures of Wedge Antilles, the only pilot to survive the 3 movies released (he must be a really good pilot, huh?). This is probably the reason why he is the most famous and loved character in relation to his screen time (well, in fact he is the second, the fist being Boba Fett). Of course Wedge is not alone, in the books are other characters from the mivies: some known to everybody: Princess Leia, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Admiral Ackbar, and others who had a little cameo:Crix Madine, Tycho Celchu (he was flying an A-Wing in the battle of Endor), Wes Janson(he was Wedge's Snowspeeder gunner in the Battle of Hoth). Also there are chractcters created in other books and comics: Winter, Warlord Zinsj,
But, of course, there are a lot of new characters , being the most important, Corran Horn and Kell Tainer.

The X-Wing series are chronogically situated 7 years after Star Wars: A New Hope. That's mean 4 years after Return Of The Jedi and a bit more than 4 years after the events in comics from Dark Horse, X-Wing : Rogue Squadron.

The entire series can be divided in 2 story arcs (at this time...).

In the first one, from Rogue Squadron to The Bacta War,Wedge is reorganizing the Rogue Squadron, the most famous and heroic squadron of the Rebel Alliance (now, New Republic). To this, he search for the best pilots, hiring those who also have some experience in commando operations. The squadron's main mission is to take Corruscant, the goverment planet. But, of course, the remains of the Empire who still are in Corruscant, commanded by the former Chief Of Intelligence, Isanne Isard, will do whatever to prevent this, or, at least, to gain something in the process. Being an Intelligent trained officer, Isard knows that the military way to win a war is not enough, so she make plans to destroy the already fragile social and economic estability of the New Republic. She creates a highly contagious virus, the Krytos, that affect all species except the human. The demand for bacta surpases by a lot the quantity in hands of the New Republic, and the non-human species begin to complain about the New Republic not caring about the non-human people...
All the way through this, Tycho Celchu, a close friend of Wedge, is treated as a traitor who was brain-washed by Isanne Isard in a place ran by her called Lusankya. Tycho claims he wasn't brain-washed, and that he was allowed to leave for some reason...
So, Wedge Antilles must try to take Corruscant, prove that Tycho Celchu is not a traitor (if he isn't...), unmask a traitor in his squadron (if he/she isn't Tycho...), and defeat Isanne Isard . All this trying to not complicate the delicate social and economic situation of the New Republic...

In the second, Begginig in Wraith Squadron, Wedge realizes that the New Republic needs new X-Wing squadron, and start searching for pilots. But this time, he select them in the opposite way than in Rogue Squadron, this time he search for the best commando operatives who also fly well. The name for this new squadsron is Wraith Squadron. He was training the squadron with the help of Wes Janson, when he is attacked by a ship from Warlord Zinsj a former imperial officer, who (as a lot more imperial officers) decided to form his own army when the Emperor died. Wraith Squadron was able, not to only defeat the ship, but also capture it. With this sudden cross in Warlord Zinsj's operation, the main mission for Wraith Squadron is clear: to defeat Warlord Zinsj. To this, they impersonate as the crew of the ship, and follow it normal course to get information in Zinsj's plans and actions...
The kind of pilots Wedge was looking for, was very few, and in almost all cases, they were rejects from other squadrons. So Wedge must acomplis his mission while fighting against his pilots' attitude problem...

The books are very well written. Both authors (Michael A. Stackpole and Aaron Allston) know how to mix dramatic situations, with some touches of comedy, and realistic space battles, all in a really entertaining adventure.
