Shirley always said he hoped to pass along the business to his son and in 1949 when Jr was 17 said to a reporter:

"Kids are apt to want to be writers or actors or something else they haven't much talent for...But this is a good business"

As the decade ended a new elemetary school was in the works. It was named for William Floyd's brother in law General Nathanial Woodhull. My third grade teacher Mrs Tribble became its principal and my Mom became it's first cook. Floyd High would graduate its first senior class in June of 1960

The recession of 1958 may of cooled things a bit because Shirleys plans for a Million Dollar Marina & Yacht Club, located on the west side of the bridge never materialised in his lifetime. The marina got dredged and bulkheaded, streets got paved, but the one acre size plots stayed unbuilt. By 1960 he revised his plans a bit.
