SHIRLEY
LI
Mid 1950's
- Early 1960's
Although
things may of cooled a bit for him in NYC politics, Walter Shirley
kept things moving along in his town all through the mid 50's
and into the early 60's. And like all moving & shaking not
everyone wanted to move or shake & sometimes feathers got
ruffled!
The next
few pages will present a variety but not in any particular chronological
order, of what was happening through those years.
Always a
fastidious man, Shirley liked to instill that into his town .
And why not? It's much easier to sell attractive property to prospective
homeowners right? One of his earliest promotions was a Home
& Lawn Contest
One of the
biggest stories was perhaps THE BRIDGE and the entire bridge story
is on the "Long Wait For A Short Bridge" page located
HERE
Another big story locally in
1959 was moving the train station from Mastic to Shirley this.
He may of been inspired by Quinby's original 1910 Station Plans
& Location . It wound up there but made no new friends in
moving it. Click here to read Down By The Station
