18th Century Port Ulao

Ulao is located in
what is now the Town of Grafton. In
the 1850s, it was a thriving port village where steamers stopped to load wood
for fuel.
Ulao Pier in the 1850s
A pier extended 1,000 feet into the lake;
quite a construction feat in that period in time.
Possible Remnants of Pier
This photo was taken in the fall of 2003
when Lake Michigan was at its lowest level since 1966. Although not verified, the two stumps
sticking out of the water appear to be pilings from the old pier.
