THE WITCH IN DR. KILDARE'S FUTURE

TV Star Parade
August 1964
Dick's managed to beat out most competition--but can he top a sibyl?
She probably won't ride in on a broomstick--and she's definately not a stringy-haired, haggard old crone left over from Halloween. But just the same this green-eyed enchantress will be flying into thousands of homes (via the airwaves) as a witch--who's also a vision of loveliness--when she invades the Thursday night video tubes this September 17.
She's Elizabeth Montgomery--a luscious and curvy blonde, and she'll be using all her charm to lure viewers away from their favorite medic, James Kildare.
Elizabeth is one third of a triple barrel threat against Dick in the coming TV season--and she's not going to hold back on any of the black magic she's supposed to be practicing in her new series. The other two are that superb actress, Agnes Moorehead, who plays Elizabeth's mother--and a super witch if ever there was one, and Dick York, cast in the part of a befuddled but loving husband who is not too sure about his wife's other life.
This trio will be the stars of ABC's new comedy series,
Bewitched, which is the TV adaptation of two highly successful films, I Married A Witch and Bell, Book and Candle.
The comedy is a first continuing series for Elizabeth, who has done much TV work in dramatic programs. She began her theatrical career at 18--but she was always involved with film and acting personalities through her father, producer and actor Robert Montgomery. She actually made her acting debut opposite her dad over 12 years ago, and she decided then that she also would like a career in acting. Her parents did not exactly encourage her ambitions in show business, but they did nothing to hamper her, either, and after graduating from Westlake School for Girls (sic), Elizabeth entered the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Then came parts in Tv and movies--including a role in
The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell with the late Gary Cooper. Other top roles in movies and Broadway followed, and eventually she became the star of her own series. Along the way, she also managed to marry three husbands. Her present and third husband is director Bill Asher--who not surprisingly, is the director of Bewitched.
Though Elizabeth says that she is not an actress "riddled with ambition," she has obviously taken a big and ambitious step in challenging Dick Chamberlain and NBC for a portion of the Thurday night audience. She will have to use all her charm and magic to lure and bewitch the dial turners to her part of the TV world--because Dick has his own magic qualities firmly entrenched in the hearts of millions of fans.
