On January 2, 1920 when the census taker came to call at the Knapp Estate, Claire A. Knapp is 28 years old and listed as the Head Of House Hold / Joseph F. , her younger brother is residing there. Big place for two people. She owns the place Free & Clear (surprise) also there probably in a separate house are The Clune Family, William his wife Loretta their children Mildred A. and William J. and William's brother Henry who are listed as caretakers For (Knapp?) along with (Mak?) Sayama a Japanese "houseman"

The Clunes from Ireland, could very well be related to Arthur Clune for whom the Mastic Beach American Legion Post is named. The land on which the Legion Post was built was donated and appeared to be on the northern border of The Knapp Estate. Of further interest is both Knapp's have "NO OCCUPATION" but Joseph F. has an office in NY. Just above them on Lines 4- 10 are the 4 Smith Brothers and Sisters (Manor of St George) and their household servants. As the census taker Arnold Goskese(sp?can't read your handwriting Arnie) worked his way through the neighborhood that day he encountered only one family living between The Smith's and The Knapp's The Manzeglio's from Italy who were Farmers. Most everyone else I found on these pages of the census are working as caretakers on private estates.
