Melody kicked back in her living room watching TV. She almost never watched TV so she didn’t know what was on. She flipped onto a station called MTV. A show called TRL was on. A cute dark haired guy was introducing videos.

“And at the number one spot today is Larger Than Life by the Backstreet Boys. Remember to keep calling in and voting because tomorrow is the last day before we have to retire this video. Their new video for Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely will premier with the next two weeks. Enjoy your number one request, once again, The Backstreet Boys,” the guy said.

Melody sat straight up when she heard their name. Wow, she thought, had I have just turned on the TV occasionally I would have known who Aj was. Melody laughed when she saw Aj in his dark purple/blue suit. Her mom heard her laugh and came into the room to make sure Melody wasn’t going crazy, but stopped dead when she saw the TV.

“Is that…” Melody nodded and laughed again when she saw the look on her mom’s face as she watched Aj dance around in his cut-off shirt. She shook her head and left the room, trying not to laugh herself.

“I’m going to have to say something about this,” Melody murmured to herself, clicking off the TV. She looked at her watch, 6:14, Suzy would be coming in 16 minutes. Melody headed in the direction her mom took.

“Mom?” she called. She heard a muffled, I’m in here, come from the kitchen. Her mom was baking brownies.

“Mom, I think I’m going to go to bed, I really am not feeling that well. Could you make sure no one disturbs me, I really need some sleep.”

“Sure honey, that’s fine, have a nice rest.” Melody held back her smile and made her way back to her room, closing the door behind her. She quickly stuffed some pillows under her sheets. She knew her mom too well. Her mom would make sure no one came in the room, since she thought Melody really needed to sleep, but being her mother, would want to peek in the door to see if she was okay. The pillows would do just the trick. Melody silently climbed out the window and snuck down the street to where Suzy was waiting in her car.

“Have any problems?” Suzy asked, starting the engine.

“None, at all,” Melody smirked.

“I wouldn’t be all perky and happy, your parents could still find out.”

“So, at least I’d have gotten to go to the concert.”

“True.”

“Now drive woman!” Melody laughed, pounding on the dashboard. She was very excited that she had gotten out of the house. Now only if my parents don’t realize I’m gone, she thought. The drive to the arena was only a half-hour; they pulled in at 7:03.

“Dang, the concert is starting in an hour,” Suzy said, stepping out of the car and walking towards the backstage entrance. Tons of fans circled around the door, hoping to see one of the Backstreet Boys. Melody walked up to a guard and tapped him on the shoulder.

“Excuse me, we are on the list to go backstage,” Melody said sweetly.

“Names?” he barked. Melody wiped the spit off her face before answering.

“I’m Melody Hartford and this is Suzy Downs,” she said, pointing to Suzy, who had finally made her way through the crowd.

“Okay, go right in,” he said, moving aside. They heard grumbles from the girls around them, which soon turned into shrieks and Aj walked out the door. Aj walked up to Melody and wrapped his arm around her.

“I though I heard you guys out here,” he said as he started to head back to the door. The fans stopped him though. They all wanted pictures and autographs, and Aj couldn’t turn down the fans pleas. He signed autographs while Suzy and Melody waited. She saw girls giving her the evil eye. She heard to girls talking behind her back.

“Yeah, of course he would have some model like girl. He couldn’t date a regular girl? I’m sure she is shallow and stupid anyway. The only thing he probably sees in her is her looks, she doesn’t deserve him,” one fan said spitefully to another, who agreed immediately. Melody shook her head thinking how immature some people could be. Aj signed a few autographs before taking Melody’s hand and leading her, followed by Suzy, into the backstage area.

“We are going on soon,” Aj informed them, “Vallery is already out in the audience. Frank, the security guard over there,” he said pointing to a large man standing near the door, “will take you to your seats. You can’t tell Vallery anything, she has to see for herself.”

“No problem,” Melody said, gazing out into the audience where she found Vallery sitting by herself and looking bored. She was playing with her hair and singing to herself.

“Frank!” Aj called, the guard quickly came over to them. “Take Suzy and my gal to their seats, make it look like they came in from the regular entrance, take the long way around.” Frank didn’t say a word; he nodded and motioned for the two girls to follow him. They hurried after the guard; Melody turned around to mouth “bye” to Aj. Melody wove through the crowd thinking about how she liked hearing Aj call her my gal. That is something I definitely going to miss, she thought.

“Suzy, Mel, what are you doing here?” she heard Vallery call. Suzy and Melody exchanged a smile as they sat down.

“We got tickets to the show, but we only got two. That’s why we didn’t tell you. We didn’t want you to feel left out. You can’t blame us though, you didn’t tell us you were going to be here either,” Suzy said, thinking quickly.

“I guess your right. Man, what are the odds that we got seats by each other! Well, I’m so glad I have someone to talk to now. This is going to be great!” Vallery gushed, motioning with her hands as she talked.

“Yeah, what are the odds?” Melody said, trying hard not to laugh.
