Information for European visitors to the USA or US
and Canadian visitors traveling overseas
This page briefly covers regulations for personal radio
communications that all European travelers must be aware of before
visiting
the United States.
Many folks visit the United States
from Europe and other places. They also bring their radios with
them. This is a mistake!
European consumer grade two way radios operate on the PMR-446 standard,
which uses the 446 Mhz band.
In the United States, these frequencies are in the 70 cm
Amateur radio band!!
It is illegal to use these frequencies without an amateur radio license!
As such, you cannot use your PMR-446 radios in the
United States.
Remember, what is legal in one nation may not be legal in another.
In the United States, you must purchase FRS radios while over
here. Most FRS radios share frequencies
with the GMRS service, so be careful to read the manual and only use the license-free FRS channels. Additionally,
US and Canadian citizens CANNOT use FRS or GMRS radios outside of the
USA or Canada!
The same situations apply. Each nation allocates radio
frequencies differently, and you will be interfering with other radio
services.
I hope this information is useful. Questions?
