Amateur Radio and GMRS.

Questions have been raised about the relation between GMRS and amateur radio.

Amateur radio and GMRS are two entirely different services, governed by two entirely different sets of regulations.  Both services require an FCC issued license, and both services have different frequency bands in which licensees may operate.

Each service requires a separate license to operate.  GMRS and amateur radio do not share frequencies or operator priveleges.

Common questions:

I am a licensed ham.  Can I use GMRS frequencies without a GMRS license.

No.  Under no circumstances can you use GMRS, under your Amateur call sign.  You are subject to the loss of your amateur license if found in violation of FCC regulations.  You must get a GMRS license.

Can amateur radio operators perform emergency drills on GMRS frequencies without a GMRS license?

Again, no.  Amateur radio operators hove no special priveleges to circumvent GMRS regulations.  A GMRS license is required.

Can amateur radio operators operate on GMRS repeater systems without a GMRS license?

Yet again, no.  A GMRS license is required to use any GMRS frequency for any reason.

Can a GMRS licensee access any amateur frequencies or systems?

No.  Just as an amateur cannot access GMRS frequencies, a GMRS license does not give priveleges outside of the GMRS service.  You require an amateur radio license to use any amateur frequencies.
