Advanced Uses for GMRS

This page is under construction.  As such, you should stop by often, as it will upgrade often.

GMRS has many uses above and beyond the simple "walkie talkies" found at most consumer electronics stores.

The types of equipment used on GMRS vary in features, configurations, and price.  Equipment can run from $20 up into the thousands of dollars.

What is a repeater?  A repeater is a station that receives on one frequency (input frequency), and simultaneously retransmits it on another frequency (output frequency).  A repeater-capable radio will transmit to the repeater on the input frequency, and automatically listen on the output frequency.  A repeater is designed to extend the range of the radio accessing it.

The repeater station is typically used with an extremely tall antenna.  This allows the repeater to receive and transmit over a very large area.

This allows a GMRS operator to essentially talk over a great range using just a handheld radio.

Costs for repeater capable equiment run from about $100 and up.

You must always check with the owner of a repeater system before accessing their machine.  GMRS repeaters are not always avalable to the public.  Repeaters are considered private property and require the permission of the owner for use.
