A Report by the Regent
Today's joint meeting with the La Trobe University Liberal Club was a success. Although good arguments were brought to bear on both sides of the topic, the vote by our 'joint sitting' was unanimously in favour of the sale of Telstra (I abstained). We have determined to have another joint meeting four weeks hence (9th October 2003, noon) to discuss the topic: "What is the 'Right'?"
Some other topics mentioned for future discussion were (approximately): "Should Australia Adopt a Minimalist Neo-Colonial Foreign Policy?", "The rise of the populist Right in Europe", "Capital Punishment in the age of international terrorism", and (from a Liberal): "How should we (the Liberal Party) respond to the Greens (/New Left)". Some of these topics may turn up as discussion topics at future CIIS or Liberal Club meetings.
After our joint meeting, Lindsay, an organiser of the NOLS (Labor Left) crowd at La Trobe, suggested (to me) that the Labor (left) club could have a public debate with the Charles II Society over education policy. At our next meeting we should discuss this possibility, and whether it would be a good idea. Whether or not we have such a debate, we should have an education policy. We can discuss some basic ideas at our meeting on 22nd September, and formally adopt a policy statement on the 13th October.
Upcoming Meetings:
Monday, 15th September, 1pm, La Trobe Eagle Bar. Topic: Publicising the Society.
Monday, 22nd September, 1pm, Eagle Bar. Topic: Ideas for a CIIS Education Policy.
Monday, 29th September, 1pm, Eagle Bar. Topic: "Should Australia Adopt A Minimalist Neo-Colonial Foreign Policy?" or "Australia's Direction in a Neo-Colonial World".
Joint meeting Thursday 9th October, noon. Topic: What is the "Right"?
Monday, 13th October, noon. Formalising the CIIS Education Policy.
I also hope to deliver a talk on "Islamic Fundamentalists: Radical or Conservative?" at some future meeting, perhaps outside the University.
Long may she reign!
Trevor.
