Germany 2 - Rothenburg, Dinkelsbuhl & Landsberg am Lech

Did we mention that we really liked Rothenburg? Here are a few more pictures!

After Rothenburg, we headed down the Romantic Road to Dinkelsbuhl, which turned out to be a beautiful town rivaling that of Rothenburg! After our 1-night stay in Dinkelsbuhl, we drove down to Fussen, stopping along the way to visit Landsberg am Lech on the Lech river.

Here's a very cool shot of a 2-tiered section of Rothenburg. You can see the 2 guard towers with passageways for cars. The whole town is surrounded by a large wall that kept the town safe for all those many centuries!

One of the neat things to do in Rothenburg is to walk around the entire town on the same walkway that the guards once walked! It gives one a nice "birds-eye" view of the town. One night, Steve and Claudia walked back in to town and drank some wine on the top of one of these walls and contemplated what it must have been like to be a guard in the medieval times. It must have been nerve-wracking!

Here is a shot of Sophie being attacked by a haunted suit of armor! Look how cool and collected she is!

We ran across this fun Figuren-Theater in Rothenburg. We couldn't help but sit in on one of the performances. Unfortunately, it was in German (who would have guessed?), so we only had a bit of a clue what was going on! It was fun anyway (plus, we got to drink beer!).

One of the more interesting food items (dessert, in this case) was these strange-looking dough balls shown above. They were referred to as "snow balls" and as you can see by the look on Sarah's face, it was a BIG hit with the kids! It turned out to taste quite good, although it wasn't good for you!

OK, so this was a bar in Rothenburg with the quaint name "Hell". We couldn't help ourselves, we had to bring our snowballs to eat in Hell to let them know they really didn't have a chance of surviving the Weeks/Weil urges for sweets!

The next stop on our trip was another walled town, Dinkelsbuhl. It turns out that this town was much cooler than we had anticipated, but we only had half a day to look around. We stayed in a nice hotel and ate at a cool brewery. The above is another one of those picturesque streets so common in these Bavarian towns!

This is a cool building right down the street from our hotel in Dinkelsbuhl.

Our self-guided tour took us around the outside of the town to the wall. There were many towers all along the wall and a moat below it. Must have been hard times back then to require this kind of fortification!
This is a shot of Landsberg am Lech, where we stopped to stroll around for a while and take a bathroom break. The town covered a small valley/hill and thus had some narrow roads like this one going straight down to the Lech river. We stopped and got some coffee and ice cream for the kids before starting up again for Fussen.
