Edinburgh Civil Service resigned from the East of Scotland League
after six games of the 1923-24 season. Their record was taken over by Leith
Amateurs. Hawick United resigned from the East of Scotland League after eight
games of the 1930-31 season to return to the Border Amateur League. Berwick Rangers resigned from the East of Scotland League in January
1937. Jedburgh Artisans resigned from the East of Scotland League in
December 1937. Several other clubs also temporarily closed down during the
last two months of the season. Due mainly to the nature of the game in the south of the country,
clubs in this region regularly resigned during the season, mainly for
financial reasons. Moffat and Vale of Dryfe both resigned from the Southern Counties
League on the eve of the 1897-98 season. They were joined by Thornhill in
October. As they hadn’t played any games, the committee replaced them with
Dumfries Hibernian. The league soon suffered another blow when the 6th
Galloway Rifle Volunteers also soon pulled out after playing just a single
game. After this the league was looked upon as a side attraction and it came
as no surprise when it disbanded unfinished at the end of the season. Newton Stewart resigned from the Southern Counties league early in
the 1930-31 season after suffering a number of heavy defeats. Nithsdale Wanderers, for financial reasons, resigned from the Southern
Counties League in the Autumn of 1931. They were later joined by Solway Star. Because of the success of Queen of the South in the Scottish League
in the 1930s, Douglas Wanderers had been struggling financially as their
support deserted them for the Dumfries club.
In 1934 it came as no surprise when the club’s committee resigned from
the Southern Counties League and disbanded the club. Difficulty in attracting players was the main result of Whithorn
resigning from the Southern Counties League in December 1936. The military side RAF West Freugh resigned from the South of Scotland
League after losing 21 goals in two games of the 1948-49 season. They were
replaced by Glenluce who took over their remaining twelve fixtures. Wigtown & Bladnoch have resigned from the South of Scotland
League twice. The first in 1962-63 when the club virtually closed down for
financial reasons. The second time in 1972-73 though had a bearing on the
league championship as they resigned from the league with only one game left to
play. The league had no option but to expunge their record effectively
awarding the title to Stranraer reserves at the expense of Queen of the South
reserves. Because of this, Queens left the South of Scotland League and
returned to the mainstream reserve competitions. Creetown resigned from the South of Scotland League in 1975-76 for
financial reasons. St Cuthbert Wanderers resigned from the South of Scotland League in
1977-78 for financial reasons. Creetown resigned from the South of Scotland League in 1978-79 for
financial reasons. Dumfries United were elected to the South of Scotland League in May
1987. However one week before the start of the 1987-88 season, the club
resigned after they lost most of their players who returned to amateur
football. Gretna Community were a club elected to the 1991-92 South of Scotland
League from the Dumfries Amateur League. However after posting a couple of
impressive results, the club resigned after only seven games. Their record
was expunged. Bo’ness resigned from the Edinburgh & District League during the
1934-35 season. Northern resigned from the Scottish Alliance during the 1896-97
season. Stenhousemuir resigned from the Scottish Union after six defeats in
the 1906-07 season. The club had been experiencing ground difficulties and
had requested to the league committee that they be allowed to play their
remaining games away from home. This was refused and the club was replaced by
Wishaw Thistle. Clubs have resigned from the Scottish Combination on three occasions. Wishaw United in 1902-03 and Camelon during 1904-05 were two. The
third time came in 1897-98 when Hamilton Academical gained election to the
Scottish League after Renton had resigned after four games. War-time conditions saw three clubs resign from the Western League.
Dykehead, Royal Albert and Wishaw Thistle all pulled out during the 1916-17
season. |
