TAKE A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE
| Studying in Loyola has been a significant experience for all of us. Memories of
carefree youth. The first day of college life. The nervous encounter with the seniors.
The rituals of initiation into hostel life, including the silence hour bell. Periods of
concentrated study. Extra curricular activities. The cricket field. Tennis courts. The
Bertram tournaments. Don't you find a sense of déja vu? The process of becoming
a senior. The final exams in Bertram Hall. Anxiety over results. Jubiliation and despair.
Hurly burly of adulthood. Loyola begins to fade into nostalgia.

ILLUSTRIOUS RECTORS AND PRINCIPALS |
What brings these rites of passage is, of course, the institution, which is located
right in the heart of Madras. In the minds of eye, most, however, associate Loyola with
its illustrious Rectors and Principals. The Jesuits who served the college with distinction
is indeed a long one.
At the very beginning was Father Bertram, whose indomitable will and vision build up
the foundations of Loyola College. Then there was Father Murphy, an Englishman from Oxford.
A classical scholar. A great speaker. Admirable Teacher. A principal who combined firmness
with graciousness. The tall Father Jerome d'Souza who left his imprint on the sands of
history. Dome headed, bald, poker erect, evening walks around the college with metronomic
precision. Fathers Murphy, Gordon, Kalthil and Yedanapalli. Father Kalathil will be the
most remembered not only for the prize dairy which he established and continues to supply
wholesome milk to all living on campus of the college, triggering precious associations.
Every one of them is deeply enshrined in the collective memory of countless Loyolites.
Then appears the one and only. Father Lawrence Sundaram who represents a living continuum
between Loyola's past and its present.
For the generation of the late sixties, seventies and eighties, the
names of Francis and Kuriakose matter in a big way. Such Fathers not only encouraged
scholastic brilliance but also sportsmanship in a big way. Father Francis was young
and vibrant and is reputed to have asked many well known sportsmen to write exams in
his office. That many failed despite his magnimous gesture, is however, another story!
The longest serving Principal, Kuriakose was a man born to deal with crises: Watching,
waiting, eloquently silent but ruthlessly firm when occasion demanded and was responsible
for starting the experiment of autonomy granted to the college. Father Casimir Raj, who
was a firm believer in autonomy, followed by Leo Correya and Inchakal served the college
with dedication and committment. This is just a small sample of the long and distinguished
list of Jesuits who made Loyola one of the most reputed colleges in India.
