Comments: I am proud to prove that mathematics/engineering is not ruled out for students like me with biology back ground. This was a myth when I studied in Loyola. I am highly indebted to all the faculty in the Dept. of Zoology, for their inspiration and the enthusiasm they impart on their students are phenomonal. Special mention is due for Dr. V. A. Murthy, Dr. Selvenayagam, Prof. Ambrose, Dr. D. Sudarsanam, Amalraj and John Williams (pakka, as we refer to him, for he expects things to be perfect). I always enjoyed lectures by Dr. Sivaraman which cannot be more lucid, Dr. Venkatesan's pithy explanations with a permanent smile on his face, Madam Vimala's strict but caring approach to the students.

Loyola library is an asset for the institution, matched by very few among those I have come across so far, with a wonderful team of librarians and staff who were very nice and co-operative. I remember our department was getting renovated in a big way when I left from there. I will be happy to know about further developments in both the department, and Loyola at large.

Down the memory Line: Stayed in LOHO ( Loyola Hostel) Enjoyed the friendly homely atmosphere though the rigours of discipline was very strict under the elderly warden Rev.Fr Rapinah SJ ( a French Father - Botanist).who passed away when we were in the second Year on the previous day to the last examination of the Final term. We undertook silent hunger strike at Hostel courtyard demanding cancellation of examination & observe Holiday on the next day when he was laid to rest in the College chapel grounds.Father Lawrence Sundaram & Father Jerome d'Souza were the principals. Prof.. Soundararajan was head of the dept of commerce assisted by Mr Seshan (with a booming Voice0. Mr Seshan became the Head of Dept after we left and since passed away while in Service. MOH Farook Maricar who became Chief Minister of Pondicherry & an MP was a contemporary.His brother MOH Iqbal was our Class mate.
Would be delighted to hear from Loyolians of my time!!!
Personal: Just two years to go for my retirement. Married in August 1974 to Radha. Our Only son Aravindh is in the final year BE Student (Electronics & Communication) at Crescent Engineering College, Vandalur, Chennai 7 wants to go to USA for higher studies in Computer science.He is mad with computer Software !!I came under the influence of Swami Chinmayananda from PUC Days and later on became an active worker in Chinmaya Mission ,Chennai & served as the secretary of the Madras Centre in 1970-72

Other details: First, Arulsami, S.J., and then Lawrence Sundaram, S.J., were the principals of Loyola in my days. I belong to the first batch of Pre-University students of the University of Madras, and the first batch of B.Sc. (statistics) as opposed to the (5 years after S.S.L.C.) B.Sc (Hons) in Statistics, from Madras University. There was no Statistics professor in Loyola in those days. Messrs. Adhivarahan, Manivannan, Kunjipaulo, Matthew, Racine, S.J., were all mathematicians. First a Mr. Pattabhiraman, gold medallist(!) in B.Sc. (Hons) - Statistics from Presidency College was hired to teach us, along with his classmate, Mr. Krishnamurthy. "P" left for the Reserve Bank of India within a year. K left for the General Hospital Biostatistics Division in two years. Then we got an excellent lecturer, Mr. V. Venkatesan, a superb teacher for 2 years. Thanks to him and our interest, 12 out of 18 of us got I Class! Mr. K.A. Varadhan, the silver-tongued orator from Presidency, and Mr.Dwarakanath from Mysore nicely complemented Mr. V. Later, soon after our graduation, V left for the IAS. Last, I heard, he was in Washington, D.C. KAV also joined the IAS. He was for a while Secretary to the Central Ministry of Info and Broadcasting, but was later transfereed to Assam. One of my ckassmates is the leading mangement guru in India - Dr. Mritunjay B. Athreya, (Harvard D.B.A.). Mr. Xavier with his inimitable Kerala accent was my English (Prose) Profesor, A.L. Krishnan taught us English poetry, L.D. Murphy, S.J., taught us Shakespeare (Twelfth Night). Ramanathan Krishnan was in his final year (Honours) along with Akbar Khalili and sitharaman, when I began my P.U.C. in loyola. Ah. i could go on and on.

LOYOLA MEMORIES: Enjoyed hostel life.Elected as Mess Secretary. Who can forget Hostel warden Father Rapinat with his white beard turned grey due to cigar smoking? Sang Villu paattu - with a group, acted in College dramas and won prizes in Inter Collegiate Competitions.
In Economics Honours class, Father Basenach an old student of London School of Economics washighly respected. Father Leigh who was rearing pythons in the Fathers' Lodge. He was in charge of the Library and night study in Bertram Hall. He was strict but amiable. His famous words were: "Don't throw ink on the floor" and that kept the Library Hall in the Bertram Hall spic and span.
On Fridays, there was a film show in the Bertram Hall and when MGM lion roared all of us roared in unison. Tom and Jerry in Micky Mouse were cheered lustily.Loyola life is best remembered for numbers. We had to remember so many.College class No.Hostel Room No. Mess No. Hostel Room Lock No etc.We had a clerk called Subbu who could remember the mess bills of 700 hostelers every month!

General comments: My principal was Father Jerome De Souza. Vice-Principal was Father Murphy. Father Jerome De Souza used to take Shakespear class and it was fantastic. English Prof. was Mr.A.L.Krishnan.I was the elected President of the College Union and was the Vice-Captain of the Cricket team. I was the Secretary of the Loyola Fine Arts Society of Which Prof.E.K.Natesa Sarma, the Tamil Professor was the President. it was the first time I arranged Baby Kamala dance performance at Raski Ranjani Sabha,Mylapore.
