When I bought this double-CD in 1991, the set was not a bootleg. Since that time, these historic perfromances of the Beatles' December 31, 1962 stint at the Star-Club in Hamburg are no longer available on the open market. As is well known, these recordings are not of high quality, being originally made on a portable Grundig reel-to-reel recorder. Who would have known at that time that the Beatles were shortly to become a world-wide phenomenon? Though the quality of the sound leaves much to be desired and the Beatles often don't take themselves seriously (e.g., Lennon: "Here I am, on my nose, begging if you please...") and play the more than occasional wrong note, the energy is very high in these performances. This date marked the turning point in their career: their last performance in Hamburg, just before the whirlwind was to take off.
