The Lost Lennon Tapes series
which aired on Westwood One beginning in 1988 has been the major source for Lennon boots
ever since. Virtually all the home-made tapes (as well as many solo studio and Beatle-era
tracks) - but not all - that now appears on LP or CD for Lennon's post-Beatles material
aired on this show. And the show's host, Elliot Mintz, was kind enough not to talk
his way into, out of and over the songs as they were being aired, thus allowing many home
tapers to start a collection right off the air and for bootleggers to do that thing they
do so well.
Oddly enough ;-) Bag Records starting issuing a series of LPs in 1988 called the Lost Lennon Tapes which have apparently been the source for many of the subsequent CDs. The sound quality on the original discs is outstanding. You won't find better quality for the many home recordings chronicled in this series.
Since I wasn't able to find a place on the Web which lists the contents of the entire Bag Records series, I thought I might as well do it. I am currently underway in cataloging each of the tracks of the 35 volume series. When I'm finished (!), I hope to provide enough information so that you can tell which version of each song is where. This will allow you to see which versions or takes you may have from a different source and which you may be missing. There are more than a few duplications throughout the series.
So... here's a large table with incomplete information. As I said, this is a work in progress, so info on several songs is missing - and some that is there may be incorrect or incomplete.
Just a quick note on times. I do not have the LP for each of these volumes. For those I don't have, I'm using a stopwatch (or times from the CD-ROMs) to time each track. So if you have the LP and it says a particular track is 3:21 and my table lists it at 3:23, you'll know why. Also, anything in the Comments column that appears in quotes is something somebody actually says on the track. I included these to help distinguish it from other versions of the same song. The abbreviations I use in the comments column should be easily understood. For the lyrics and guitar chords for some of the more obscure songs, see here.
