John Lennon Unplugged

JL 901

A nice collection. Following is a table listing of the tracks, with liner notes.

Track Title Liner Notes
Imagine This live-version of Imagine was recorded at the Apollo Theatre in New York at a Benefit-concert on 17 December 1971. It's the only time that John played this song on acoustic guitar.
Watching The Wheels John trasnforms into a modern-days' folksinger for this home-demo of Watching The Wheels, recorded at the Dakota in early 1980.
Woman Is The Nigger Of The World A bluesy rendition recorded at John's first New York home, in Greenwich Village, in late 1971.
Girls and Boys Another title for Real Love, this time played on acoustic guitar at the Dakota in early 1980 (the 'piano' version was recorded half a year before, in the fall of 1979.)
The Luck Of The Irish The original John and Yoko demo from November 1971.
Maggie Mae A short look back by John to his beginnings as a skiffle-boy, recorded during Double Fantasy sessions at the Hit Factory, New York, August 1980.
Corinna, Corinna A brief rendition of this old Folksong, recorded by John just for fun at the Dakota in early 1980.
Look At Me This is the oldest demo on this CD. The orginal composing tape for this John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band track, recorded about two years earlier, in late 1968 at his Weybridge home when John was still a Beatle.
J.J./People Two passes at the same melody, each time with a different lyric, from September and November 1971. But still it wasn't right and the song finally became known as Angela on the Sometime In New York City album.
Beautiful Boy This acoustic guitar/vocal version by John was recorded during Double Fantasy sessions at the Hit Factory, New York, August 1980.
God An intense home-demo recorded with heavily-reverbed electric guitar at Tittenhurst Park in England, August 1980. [sic]
Maybe Baby A lighthearted Buddy Holly cover recorded for the soundtrack of Yoko's film Clock in New York, September 1971.
Love See the entry for God
The Happy Rishikesh Song Many sources claim that this song dates from 1968, just because the lyrics deal with John's days at the Maharishi-camp in Rishikesh, India. But the fact is that this humerous little tune was recorded at the Dakota in early 1980, when John was reminiscing, somewhat ironically about happenings 12 years time ago...
I Know (I Know) One of three almost identical demos of this Mind Games LP-track, recorded at the Dakota in late spring 1973.
Woman An early, very slow home-demo, recorded at the Bermudas in June 1980.
What You Got At this stage, still a Carl Perkins-influence rockabilly tune, with only the chorus familiar from the final record. Recorded at John's Los Angeles home in June 1974.
I'm A Man This John Lennon performance is really a spoof on the old Muddy Waters Blues-tune, recorded just for fun at the Dakota in early 1980.
Dear Yoko The original demo for this Double Fantasy song from the Bermudas, June 1980.
(Just Like) Starting Over John recorded this acoustic guitar/drum box version of his first single after five years in July 1980 at the Dakota, just days before going into the studio again. With the arrangement almost intact, this stripped-down demo served as a blueprint for the later studio recording.
Mucho Mungo John wrote this song originally for Harry Nilsson in 1974. He never recorded it himself. But for one reason or another, he made another home-demo of the tune at the Dakota in early 1976.
Howling At The Moon An unreleased song demoed in early 1980.
I'm Losing You Another demo made by John on holiday in the Bermudas in June 1980.
Mother See entry for God.
My Mummy's Dead Take 1 of the released version, the last song on John's first 'real' solo album from 1970. This version has one verse more.
