Lake Cumberland was created for the purpose of flood control and the generation of hydroelectric power. It was filled with water in December of 1950. It is the second largest lake in the Cumberland River System. Due to this fact the lake offers all types of recreational activites. It is considered the be the Houseboating capital of the World, with a dozen factories in the surronding communities. Lake Cumberland lies within the counties of Clinton, McCreary, Pulaski, Russell, and Wayne. A few of the major cities that are near the lake are Somerset, Jamestown, and London.
Lake Cumberland has a maximum pool of 760 feet above sea level. This puts water at the top of the flood gates. At this depth Lake Cumberland is 101 miles long. With 1,255 miles of shore line and 65,530 acres of surface area. This would equate to approximately 1.9 trillion gallons of water. At the normal summer pool level of 723 feet above sea level Lake Cumberland has 1,085 miles of shore line and 50,250 acres of surface area. The tree line of the lake is around the 725 feet above sea level mark. The average depth of the lake is around 90 feet, but spots can be found that reach 200 feet.
