Buckhorn Lake was formed when the Louisville District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built a dam to help reduce the flood stages downstream from the Kentucky River. The work for Buckhorn Dam was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1938. Construction on the project was started in 1956 and the Dam was operational in 1961. Buckhorn Lake is located on the Middle Fork of the Kentucky River some 43 miles above where it flows into the North Fork of the Kentucky River. This Eastern Kentucky lake is near the cities of Booneville, Hazard, Hyden and Jackson. It is just 28 miles west of Hazard. Buckhorn Lake State Park is located on the lake and has a full offering of recreational uses. There is a Boat Dock with paved ramp, public swimming area, Lodge, and Cabins. Not to mention the numerous hiking trails. There are also other state maintained recreational areas all around the lake. Summer full pool for Buckhorn is 782ft above sea level. Winter pool takes about a 24ft draw down to a stage of 757ft above sea level. At full pool Buckhorn covers an area of 1230 acres with a length of 21 miles.
