Western Maryland-Over the Alleghenies

Salisbury Viaduct

Western Maryland crosses the Casselman River Valley just north of Meyersdale, PA on this spectacular tressle. Not far away near Sand Patch is the Keystone Viaduct, another bridge necessitated by the B&O being there first.

Borden Tunnel

First tunnel on the grade climbing Savage Mountain from Frostburg. This tunnel is short and in good shape. A tramroad for the brickworks at Zihlman was on the east end of this tunnel.

Tram Road

Abutments for a very steep tram road that crossed the WM between the two tunnels. This tram connected a mine with Mt. Savage. Scattered around the mine site is what appears to be iron ore, although the abutments were built by WM as the railroad makes a cut at this location. Since WM was constructed in 1912, long after the ironworks closed, this mine probably produced fire clay or coal for the Union Brick Works at that time. Whatever the motive power up the grade, the way down was certainly provided by gravity. Foundation is adjacent to the mine for a fair sized building.

View from the mine, early morning. Looking east towards Piney Mountain, the WM is high on the mountainside in the gap.

Big Savage Tunnel

3000 foot tunnel under the crest of Savage Mountain. Reason for poor quality photo is that fog was pouring out of the tunnel, created from the fair sized stream of water originating somewhere in the murky depths.
