Cumberland Viaduct, October 1, 1999

Fourteen arch viaduct was built in 1851 to carry the West End rails over the Wills Creek floodplain. Originally single track brick construction, the concrete enlarged structure maintains aesthetic appeal.
Viaduct Junction end

The stonework on the Viaduct Junction end could possibly be the original abutment appearance.
North End of Cumberland

The North End of Cumberland offers interesting and historic buildings. The Canada Hose Company, a fire department organized in 1830, built this "new" facility in 1845.
Functional Rail Route

The west end of the Viaducts blends industrially into the much newer Corp of Engineer flood control project. The Viaduct continues to provide heavy duty support for coal drags. Since the closing of Patterson Creek cutoff, coal from a vast area of WV, including what was previously carried by the WM, comes across the Viaduct. See WM section for more Viaduct photos.
