Mile 174 to 175

At mile marker 174, a water station known as Lap was maintained in the steam era. Note in this WM publicity photo the uphill track is white with sand and the downhill track is dark with brakeshoe dust. Picture postcard was a souvenir of the 1951 York Fair to commemorate the fair's 100th anniversary. Dave Cathell Collection

This is the same vicinity in September 1999. Ballast line is not a neat and one track has bit the dust. This view is looking north, Barrelville is in the valley. Allegheny Front is the ridgeline on the right. North of Jennings Run it is called Little Allegheny Mountain.

Mountain View

The area below is called Sunnyside. The closest slope is the foot of Federal Hill, which is part of the Allegheny Front ridgeline separated from Piney Mountain by the stream flowing down Woodcock Hollow. Next in the distance is the hill above Mt. Savage, Bald Knob. The fartherest ridge is Big Savage Mountain. If you follow Big Savage ridgeline to the right, you see a clear right of way. This is the CTC line over Western Maryland's Big Savage Tunnel at Colmar, where the Alleghenies were all but conquered. In person, another right of way is visible to the left of center of the photo. This is a gas line that runs along the Mason-Dixon line.
The elevation gain is evident at this spot looking across the valley to the upper leg of the Woodcock Hollow curve. This photo does not do justice to the scene as the train brakes back down the mountain.
The important goal of Savage Mountain ridgeline is about 13 miles uphill distance from this spot on the mountainous WM.
