Hyndman, PA, October 31, 1999

Part of the former B&O station remains as a maintenance facility.

Recent Conrail absorption has increased traffic through town.

Dick Leonard points out the former location of the Pennsylvania Railroad station that is now a part of his backyard.

Bridge 10.

Helpers are now added further east than usual to avoid tying up the crossings in town.

Further up the valley from Hyndman is Bedford Springs Hotel. I am not an expert on this, but I believe it was served by a predecessor of the Pennsylvania Railroad that ran to Hyndman and Cumberland. This line was initially the Bedford and Bridgeport (Bridgeport was the original name for Hyndman). The railroad was built by the Pennysylvania RR as a "Commmutation Line", the early PRR was able to avoid or "commute" certain taxes if they built raillines that the state wanted. The Bedford and Bridgeport became a part of a system that included the Huntingdon and Broad Top Mountain Railroad which was involved in a major power play with Henry Gassaway Davis (West Virginia Central & Pittsburg RR) and the PRR against the B&O. The H&BTM RR/ Bedford & Bridgeport provided an alternate route for Georges Creek and Elk Garden coal to eastern markets by avoiding the B&O monopoly at Cumberland.
I have read where this hotel was also served by horse carriage service from Cumberland's B&O station, so it must have been quite a destination. This hotel is a survivor of the great railroad connected hotel era of the 1800's such as Deer Park and Oakland. Even with its historic value, it seems to be a millstone for any of the groups who try to develop it.
