Cumberland Narrows, December, 1999

Eastbound trains wait for clearance at this location stop before blocking Cumberland crossings

The busy CSXT side of the Narrows was first occupied by a line going to the Mt. Savage ironworks in the 1840's.

The other side was built by the Georges Creek and Cumberland, later WM. Today it is used by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.

Wills Creek cut this 900 foot slice through Wills Mountain. B&O would follow Wills Creek up to the continental divide at Sandpatch. The highway is Alternate US Rt. 40, which was the National Road from Cumberland to Vandalia, Illinois.
