MAYON VOLCANO RESTIVE, DANGER ZONE DECLARED

Legazpi City, May 16, 1998 - The Philippine Institute off Volcanology and Seismology has declared a six-kilometer radius from the top of Mayon Volcano as a "permanent danger zone"  following instrument reading indicating signs of moderate volcanic unrest in the world-famous perfect cone.

Phivolcs said that while an eruption is not imminent, heightened volcanic activity such as sudden explosions could occur without sufficient advance warning.

Phivolcs reported that a total of 14 volcanic quakes were recorded yesterday, 13 of them classified as high frequency events. Signs of volcanic unrest began last Sunday, and continued non-stop, prompting the government to raise the alert level from Level 0 to Level 1 on May 13.

Phivolcs warns that any human activity around the volcano, especially in the southeast slope in front of the Bonga channel would be highly hazardous.
